Not that all dragons needed guardians, Dragon was a special case. Lord Avondale was not sure if she remembered the day she was hatched, but he felt it was not his place to tell her why he had recombined her with the demon. It had not been required that he recombine the two as Dragon could have easily lived without the demon's spirit within her, but all ten dragon soothsayers had claimed that a demon would kill every single dragon then take over the ten galaxies. While Lord Avondale still lived and breathed, he swore that would never happen--although, by recombining the demon with Dragon, he wondered about alternate timelines.
Recombining the two has had strange side effects on Dragon: it turned her into the strongest dragon ever, white doll ears replaced her normal ears in human form (a sign that the demon was inside her), she turned into the demon once in while, and every once in a while it made her belive she was as weak as a human when she was as strong as ever. Lord Avondale knew that if Dragon really tapped into her powers, she would realize there would be none that could stop her--not even himself nor her daughter--should she go on a rampage. Thankfully, the demon within her was not aware of this either.
Minutely looking over his shoulder, Lord Avondale said, "Come on out, Shalimar. I know you're there."
Peering around a tree, Shalimar hurried forward and smiled. Since she changed from her baby to adult form, Lord Avondale wondered exactly how strong the hatchling would turn out to be. "How did you know I'd be here Lord Abondale?"
Even though she was a full adult, she still had the speech problems that afflicted the young. "Your stealth techniques are very good, Shalimar; but not good enough to fool an old fogie like me."
Giggling, Shalimar said, "You said fogie."
Looking at Wynn peering out of Shalimar's hair, Lord Avondale said, "Didn't I tell you to keep her at home?"
"I am sorry sir," Wynn said. "She's headstrong and wouldn't listen. She wants to find her mother very badly."
Sighing, Lord Avondale said, "Being headstrong runs in the females in her family...Well come on you two. Stay close."
"I think we'll find momma today," Shalimar said, all but walking on Lord Avondale's cloak. "I can feel it."
At least she's the one with optimisim, Lord Avondale thought, watching as Shalimar skipped ahead of him. Dragon's guardians feel the same way as I do: hopelesness. Watching as Moochi ran headlong into the door frame, Lord Avondale muttered, "Dumb dog..."
Leading the way to the hill that overlooked Durem, Lord Avondale guestured to the others to spread out and begin searching. Almost immediately, Moochi began digging in the dirt and barking happily. A few seconds later, Shalimar and Wynn joined him.
*. . .*. . .*. . .*. . .*
Unable to stay awake and upright anymore, Dragon collapsed against the electrified bars.
*. . .*. . .*. . .*. . .*
Suddenly, Shalimar's digging became frantic and began to repeatedly scream, "MOMMA!"
Because he was at the base of the hill, Lord Avondale's head snapped around on his neck like it was on a string. Racing up the hill, he said, "What is it Shal?"
"MOMMA'S BEING HURT BADLY!"
"Where is she?"
"Underground!"
"Below us?!"
"YESH!"
"Grab Moochi and stand aside," Lord Avondale ordered, his eyes splitting into draconic slits.
Once the hatchling had moved herself and Moochi away, Lord Avondale began to mutter a spell while pointing his hand at the hole created by the dog and Shalimar. A line of ice shot from his hand and began to bore itself into the ground. Shifting positions, Lord Avondale tilted the ice shard (which was continually growing larger) so it would create a gentle downward slope.
Because he was still attached to the shard, Lord Avondale felt the tip grind against some kind of metal surface. Muttering another spell, he transformed the ice tip into a diamond tip to finish boring the hole. Once he felt the ice drill break through, Lord Avondale cancelled the spell.
"Move quickly," Lord Avondale said to the others, "but stay behind me."
Barking to grab Lord Avondale's attention, Moochi turned himself into a dune buggy.
"I'll be de-horned," Lord Avondale said as Shalimar, Wynn, and the other guardians climbed in. "I guess the mutt isn't COMPLETELY useless."
Climbing into the driver's seat, Lord Avondale shifted the Moochi-Buggy into gear and sped down the 1000-foot tunnel.
*. . .*. . .*. . .*. . .*
At the last moment, the Moochi-Buggy stopped of it's own accord and threw it's riders into one of the most gruesome scenes that even Lord Avondale had seen--and the battle at Lady Koopa's home planet for the blood gem had been pretty bad. Lightening seemed to be coming from everywhere at once--instantly, Lord Avondale knew that parts of Gaia had to be going through power surges.
Shoving Shalimar behind him, Lord Avondale yelled, "Stay back! It's too dangerous for you!"
Struggling to get around me, Shalimar screamed, "SHE'S BEING ELECTROCUTED DAMNIT!"
Shocked at what Shalimar said, Lord Avondale looked to where she was pointing. Shading his eyes against the bright glow of hundreds of thousands of volts of electricity blazing from a center point, Lord Avondale saw that there was something or someone in the center. Narrowing his eyes, he saw that the person at the center was--"DRAGON!!!"
Flying out of his pocket, Fluffy zoomed towards the center of the electricty burst. Squealing happily, the rodent suddenly sucked all the excess energy into itself(+)--and instantly fell back to sleep.
Making sure that Wynn and Dragon's remaining guardians would keep Shalimar back, Lord Avondale rushed forward. To the right of the cage where Dragon was held captive were two blackened corpses. The scent of one was familier to Lord Avondale but he did not have time to wonder why it seemed so familier--Dragon was more important at the moment. Checking her pulse, Lord Avondale muttered, "No. Damnit no."
Knowing that simple healing techniques could not bring her back from the brink of death until she was breathing, Lord Avondale began to perform CPR--ach chest compression and resuscitating breath becoming more frantic than the last. All of Dragons ribs and her breast bone snapped. Just as Lord Avondale was switching from chest compressions to resuscitating breathing, Dragon took a breath.
Glancing up, Lord Avondale saw that the others had drawn closer. Picking Dragon up in his arms, Lord Avondale said, "She's alive, but she's not out of danger. She won't be out of danger until she's awake. Wynn, take Shal to the WTGR, Dragon's friends deserve to know what is going on. I will take Dragon's guardians and Dragon back to her place to begin to heal her."
"Yes sir," Wynn said, picking Shalimar up on her back.
"And," Lord Avondale added, "if anyone asks, the kind of healing this requires is known only to myself."
Wynn nodded and trotted off.
