As Wolf and Dai went off to rescue Flan, Broden reached for his holsters. Finding no guns, he said, "That's right. Meimei [1] said no weapons."

n** growled as the demons and the kitsunes began to surround them.

"Well it's alright for you," Broden replied, trying to guess which kitsune or demon would attempt to attack first. "You've got claws and teeth. I've got to figure a way to win them over with my pretty face and sharp wit."

Snarling, n** lunged forward at a demon.

"You've got to leave me some fun!" Broden said, wading in after her.

Blocking one kitsune's fist with his forearm, Broden grabbed the tail of a demon and swung it around into the kitsune. Feeling some slack in the tail even when swinging the demon, Broden grinned. Yanking as hard as he could on the tail, Broden yelled "HA!" as the tail ripped free from the base of the demon's spine.

Looking at the tail, Broden glanced at n** with an arched eyebrow and a grin. "Now all I need is a fedora, a leather bag, theme music, and a slightly different attire." [2]

n** growled.

"What?" Broden asked, raising his fist quickly to hit a demon attacking from behind.

n** rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, right,' Broden replied. Turning his attention on the approaching demons and kitsunes, Broden cracked the makeshift whip to keep them back. Over his shoulder, he yelled, "Hurry and get her free you two! Flan, once you're free, let 'em fly!"

Feeling something sharp p***k his neck, Broden slapped at it.

Groaning, Broden opened his one good eye. Recognizing the faint tingling running through his body, he mumbled, "Alright. I haven't had that much electricity coursing through me since I pissed off a god of lightening."

"Oh good he's awake," Dai said. "You should really see your hair, Broden."

"Oh I imagine it's standing on end somewhat," Broden replied. Looking about, he said, "So we're strapped to tables in a room that looks like an alchemists' lab compared to her lab [3]. Have we figured out where we are?"

"The most we've gotten out of them is that this is the Silver River Den," Wolf said. "Not very ingenious if you ask me."

"I agree," Broden said. "It's rather stating the obvious. Want to lay bets this belongs to Est--OH! That's the spine! Aaaand there goes spinal fluid."

Something had jabbed itself between his L3 and L4 vertebrae and was draining fluid. Hearing Wolf, Dai, and n** cry out, he figured that they also were getting spinal taps. The kitsunes and demons obviously had no intentions of trying to be as gentle as possible.

"Where's Flan?" Broden asked suddenly. He figured that she would have unlocked her powers by now.

"She's to my right," Wolf replied. "They've got her heavily sedated. I think they know about her."

"Hrmph," Broden said. Testing the strength of the straps holding them down, Broden said, "n** see if you--GRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Over a thousand volts of electricity surged through Broden's spine.

"We'll have none of that," a slimy voiced demon said, stepping out of the shadows. "We've run biotests on your cervical fluids and we know what each of you are, my pets."

"Broden, are you okay?!" Dai asked.

Chuckling painfully, Broden groaned, "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. I seem to have forgotten my apple today though."

Walking up and down the row of captives, the demon said, "Sadly, our collars are not meant for giant lizards or blood suckers. And, we cannot allow the mind speaker to awaken for now." Spotting something to Dai's left, he said, "None of that, my fine faux feline, unless you wish for the lizard to have a taste of electricity through his nervous system again."

"Go ahead, n**," Broden said. "I liked it. Go on with what you were doing."

Snapping his fingers, the demon ordered two kitsunes to step forward and snap collars around Wolf and Dai's neck before they were released. Instantly, Wolf and Dai leapt forward--only to collapse into convulsions.

"The collar you see before you is used to control other mammals," the doctor said, his hand holding down the button on a switch. "Whenever they get out of control, we give them a little jolt until they behave."

"You do realize that once I get out of here," Broden replied jovially, "I'm going to shove that remote down your throat only after I put one of those collars around your neck and jolt you a few times?"

The demon grinned as another burst of electricity surged through Broden's nervous system. Looking down at Wolf and Dai, he said, "Now that the puppy and the kitty know what will happen if they don't behave, shall we go see the master?"

"Bite me," Wolf growled, attempting to pick himself up off the floor.

The demon electrocuted Wolf, Dai, and Broden again. "You see, if any of the three of you act out, I will have to hurt all three." Glancing at n**, he added, "And if you so much as twitch an ear, these three are going to fry."
