Ding-dong!
Groaning, I snuggled deeper beneath my covers.
Ding-ding-dong!
Muttering, I pulled my covers tighter around me.
Ding-ding-ding-dong!
"IT'S FIVE IN THE MORNING!" I yelled, my eyes squinched shut. "COME BACK AROUND NOON!"
Ding-ding-ding-ding-dong!
"Ratsm, fratsm, terroratsm," I growled, stumbling sleepily out of bed. Opening the front door, I snapped, "What?!"
"Merry Christmas!" my best friend, Kyle Foxx, said. Reaching past me, he flipped the living room lights on.
"Do you realize what time it is?" I yawned, moving aside to let him in and squinting in the sudden brightness.
"Yeah," Kyle replied, pushing my blanket aside and sitting on my couch. "Five in the after noon, you'd know that if you opened your curtains."
My windows had thick navy blue curtains pulled tight over them. Picking my blanket up and wrapping it around me like an Eskimo and plopping down on the couch beside him, I said, "Well, I'm not a daytime person. I'm more of a night owl."
"Don't I know," Kyle sighed, rolling his eyes. "Well look, it's Christmas Eve. Your parents are still at the lab and my parents are still waiting for me to show up. They think of you as a daughter--so I've heard anyway--and would really like it if you'd come over."
Chuckling, I replied, "Of course they consider me a daughter. My parents, since I was born, were always at the lab on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so they always sent me to your place. There's no need for an invitation silly."
"I...know that. But I thought I'd ask anyway."
Squinting at Kyle, I could see a blush starting to creep up his face. "You like me don't you!"
"As a friend!" Kyle replied indignantly.
"You want me to be more than a friend," I teased.
Just as Kyle opened his mouth to reply, my apartment door exploded open in a shower of smoke and wood shards. Swearing, Kyle used his body to protect me as debris flew everywhere.
"KYLE!" I screamed as a piece of my door shot through his chest.
A second later, men dressed in white NFPA suits and carrying cow tasers swarmed into my apartment. As they filled the apartment and surrounded me, they took no notice as they knocked my things over and broke my porcelain collectibles. As one, they lowered their tasers at me.
Ignoring them, I shifted Kyle around until he was lying in my arms. "Ky?"
"I...I'm sorry," Kyle said, coughing up blood. Based on the position of the wooden shard, I figured it must have pierced his lungs. "I...should have waited."
"No, no, it's okay," I said, my voice cracking with emotion. "You'll be fine."
"No...I won't. I'm studying...to be a doctor...remember?"
"Don't talk, don't talk," I said, tears running down my face.
But as Kyle closed his eyes for the last time, I knew he would not be talking any more. My sorrow turning to anger, I looked up at the people who had invaded my apartment and killed my friend--my best friend since childhood. Spotting the logos on the suits--a letter Z inside of a circle--my anger turned to blind rage.
"YOU COULD HAVE KNOCKED INSTEAD OF BLASTING IN LIKE A BUNCH OF TERRORISTS AND KILLING KYLE!"
"Your parents have ordered us to come for you and to use whatever force deemed necessary."
" 'Whatever force deemed necessary?' " I snarled. " 'Whatever force deemed necessary?' What the hell am I? An escaped fugitive from the law or an animal?!"
Motioning for the others to close in, the apparent leader turned on his taser.
"That ain't happening bub!" I said, lying Kyle's body down and leaping off the couch and landing between it and my refrigerator.
Because my apartment had a low ceiling, I had little room to work in. But, being more used to the confinement of the apartment than the people in the bulky uniforms were, I picked my floor lamp up and used it as a staff to force the men back and away.
As my rage grew, what felt like a lightning bolt flashed through my head. Screaming, I dropped the lamp and clutched my head. Dropping to my knees, I felt something strange happening to my body--a change of sorts.
"She's starting! Knock her out now before it goes too far!"
With twenty or more cow tasers electrifying me, I quickly passed out.
