I got this book a while ago, and read it a while ago but it still is a momentus book.
Ruba moves from Haiti to Mississippi in 1969. Her life changes as she moves on from learning lore and magic of her herratige. She's expected to change, wear white startched dresses, avoid the white persons eyes when she walks by, and leave her ancestors' way behind. But the biggest hurricane is coming to the missisippi coast, and she must use everything in her power to protect her family from the angry boy threatening to take their lives, and from the storm that would wash them away.
Its really good. Shows a strong african american girl facing discrimination she never knew. I love how the odd magic comes into view and how the hurricane not only posses as one of natures violent acts but also as a wicked villian.
"Mississippi's hard," said Grandmother Jones. "Mississippi's the world of the worst, like they said. And this fight, it's far from over, Ruba. I hope you realize you've landed in the middle of a battle bound to last your whole life . Don't spend all your rage these first weeks. You'll need it later."
Its a fantastic book.
