Once upon on a time, in the forest of Golden Leaf, much commotion was about. The Boar King Louis had called forth a meeting within The Clearing. Many animals traveled from the farthest ends of the forest to be at The Clearing this day. For not a normal day was it. This day was The Meeting of the Estates.
The forest was in crisis...This winter had proved a shortage of berry and nut. The animals of the forest were starved. Though not all of them were. The First Estate, the forest's holy lot, lived a comfortable life serving their gods and endulging in a 10% tax upon the animals of the Third Estate. The Second Estate, the noblity of the forest, were fed fine upon the nut and berries gathered by their lowly workers from the Third. And of course, the king and his beloved sat upon their throne engorged with food produced and found by other's hard work. While the first two estates and the king enjoyed themselves the common animals of the forest starved.
At last the king began his speech.
"Animals of Golden Leaf, I know of your hardships. Think not that you have been forgotten in this difficult time. The Lady of Winter has dealt us a cruel hand this year. Many of us have fallen at her mericiless attempt to break us. But we shan't let her have her way. We shall prove victorious against her famine.
"I have called you all here today to discuss our means of survival. I want to hear all of your opinions. We shall have a vote by order as to what shall be done."
The sheep and wolves of the first estate gathered with the nobles of the second. The third estate, excluded from this, spoke amongst themselves enraged at that the vote shall be that of order.
After much disscussion, the estates presented their suggestions. The First Estate would present theirs first.
Bowing down before the king, a sheeply representative of the First Estate spoke their words.
"Your Majesty, we believe increasing the tax upon the Third Estate shall greatly help our struggling forest".
"Thank you for your suggestion", the king answered.
Next was a deer from the Second Estate. Also bowing to his king he spoke saying, "Your Majesty, we also believe increasing the tax upon the Third Estate shall better our lovely home".
"Thank you for your suggestion", the king answered as he had the first.
And finally a rabbit from the Third Estate presented theirs. Bowing to the king he began. " Your Majesty, we of the Third Estate believe that The First and Second Estate be taxed as well so that more food go to those of the forest. We also believe some of their lands should be used for that of growing food".
The king replied as he did the others, "Thank you for your suggestion".
After a few moments of the thought, the Boar King spoke once again.
"After much thought and consideration, I have come to conclusion that higher taxes on the Third Estate shall better our forest most. Representatives of the estates raise your paws or hooves if you agree."
The sheep and the deer raised their hooves, agreeing with their king. Though the rabbit of the third estate did not raise his paw to this decree, the Third Estate would have to abide by it still.
The Meeting of the Estates did not solve the hungers of the Third Estate, but some good did come of it. The animals of the Third Estate from every end of the forest shared the same problems and worries. Through this meeting they had been brought together. Though many lived in different areas of the forest, the animals of common were now united through their difficulties.
