Insistent tapping reached her ears, loud and clear. She was laying in bed, glancing at the analog alarm clock on her bedside table. It was dark in her room, but not enough to obscured her view of the simple clock. It wasn’t keeping her up. Most would have found it annoying, but she welcomed the sound. It broke the silence of the empty neighborhood and kept her from falling deep into her thoughts. It was soothing and rhythmic in a way. And focusing on the sound helped to keep her mind blank so that she could eventually fall asleep.
She was one of those people with anxiety, the kind in which their minds refused to shut off when it was time to sleep. Instead without any control, her brain starts recounting conversations, of what she should have done or could’ve said better, what she has to do the next day and all the ways something could go wrong, and so on. The ‘what ifs’ are the worst. No matter how many times she tried to rationalized her thoughts it didn’t curb her toxic worries.
She tried everything to figure out a method that bought her to a swift peaceful sleep. She discover that sound, especially music work the best out of all the other ways. It not only helped with anxiety, but insomnia too. The only problem was the wait that her music player needed in order to charge its battery. She forgot to do it earlier and now she has to settle for the ticking of her clock.
She shifted closer to the sound, pulling the blanket over her head to blockout the moonlight.
'Better than nothing,' she thought, shutting her eyes and surrendering her mind to the beat.
