How similar or different is Portugal and Brazil's Portuguese?
It’s not exact, but the closest I can compare it to is the differences between US English and UK English. For example in the US, we say apartments, but in the UK they say flats. In the US, they go on vacation while in the UK, they go on holidays, or hols.
The spelling for certain words is written differently too. In the US we write it as color, but the UK they write is as colour, and so on. There’s also a slight difference in grammar and/or slang (which can differ in the location of where someone might come from within the country). But mostly it’s the same language with some slight differences.
So keeping that in mind, in Portugal they say tiro com arco (bow and arrow), but in Brazil they say arco e flecha. In Portugal they spell camião (truck) while in Brazil they spell it as caminhão. In Portugal, truck driver would be camionista while in Brazil it would be caminhoneiro. There’s also differences in vocabulary, phonetics and syntax, but I’m not feeling too well right now to get deeper into the topic.
I actually went on a little rant about this some time ago. I was trying to find sources of European Portuguese to improve my understanding of the language, but everything I found was for Brazil Portuguese, which I wasn’t looking for. [x]
