Makeup That Will Last The Whole Day |

I don’t wear much makeup, but there might be a special occasion (like attending a wedding, party, being on television, etc.) that I’ll want to wear makeup, especially something that will last throughout the day. In case that day comes when I need such makeup, I want to be prepared by already doing the research. And I don’t just look at the reviews, but those that actually put the products to the test to know which truly works.
I will be listing drugstore and department makeup brands so that there are plenty of options to choose from. I’ve also listed the prices, which may vary — depending on your location and/or where you plan to purchase the item. It’s definitely good to know when you’re on a budget or just can’t afford higher end products (and want to know cheaper alternatives that work just as well).
Just remember that what worked for other people, may not worked for you.
PRIMER
Primer is super important when it comes to making your “face” last into eternity. They refine pores, act like a barrier to the skin with some versions offering SPF, corrective and reparative properties all in one. Beyond acting like a protective glove for your skin, primer creates a layer for makeup to rest on top of and cling to for dear life. So you don’t have to worry about your makeup fading or sliding off your face.

FOUNDATION
Oil-free formulas is the best because it stays put. They don’t contain the emollient ingredients that can make makeup slide off your face. But if your skin is on the dry side, you’ll need to use a hydrating formula. To keep it in place, first let your moisturizer sink in completely (for five minutes or more, then your primer) before spreading on the foundation. Then lock it in with translucent powder, which will help soak up oils that can accelerate fading.
Illuminating Finish Powder Compact Foundation by Bobbi Brown, $46.00 The Make Up Dual Balancing Foundation SPF 17 by Shiseido, $38.50 Amazing Face Oil-Free Foundation by Too Faced, $36.00 Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup by Lancome, $38.50 Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup by Urban Decay, $39.00 Soft Focus Compact Wet & Dry Mineral Foundation by KIKO, £12.50 ($20.14) Skin Evolution Foundation SPF 10 by KIKO, £12.90 ($20.77) Luminous Silk Foundation by Giorgio Armani, $62.00 Lasting Finish 25 Hour Foundation by Rimmel, $7.99 Colorstay Foundation by Revlon, $9.98 Teint Resist Long Wear Endless Comfort Transfer Resistant Foundation SPF 10 by Yves Saint Laurent, $55.00 Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20 by Neutrogena, $12.49 TLC Truly Lasting Color by Almay, $12.00 True Match Super Blendable Makeup by L’Oreal, $10.95 Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation by Make Up For Ever, $36.00
Note: Most makeup contains at least some SPF especially foundations and concealers generally this SPF is made up of Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide particles, these are pure white and they certainly show up like that on camera. So if you want to avoid looking like a ghost when you’re photograph, it’s best that you avoid products with SPF.
CONCEALER
The best concealers are those that match your skin tone. But generally, concealers that have peach undertones are better for dark circles and those with green undertones eliminate redness from blemishes. What you want is a densely pigmented (but not liquidy) cream formula. Use your finger to dab the concealer on dark circles; apply to red spots with a small brush, and then pat with your finger to blend the cover-up into the skin.
Quick, Hide! Easy Blend Concealer by Origins, $17.00 Radiant Creamy Concealer by NARS, $29.00 Lasting Perfection Ultimate Wear Concealer by Collection 2000, £4.19 ($6.75) 24/7 Concealer Pencil by Urban Decay, $19.00 High Definition Liquid Concealer by Smashbox, $23.00 Fit Me Concealer by Maybelline, $4.99 Studio Finish Concealer by MAC, $19.00 Pro Longwear Concealer by MAC, $20.00 All Day Foundation & Concealer by Stila, $23.00 Fake Up Concealer by Benefit, $24.00
EYESHADOW
It’s always recommended to first apply an eye-shadow base (such as a primer), or any concealer that doesn’t feel too oily, then top it with powder shadow. Priming your lids will help the powder adhere (this trick won’t work if you use cream shadow, which has more slip to it).
Mineral Eye Color by Mary Kay, $8.00 Aqua Matic Waterproof Slide-On Eye Shadow by Make Up For Ever, $21.00 True Romance Eyeshadow Trio by Kat Von D, $24.00 ColorStay 12-Hour Eye Shadow by Revlon, $5.48 Prime Time Primer Eyeshadow by Bare Escentuals, $12.00 Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner by BeneFit Cosmetics, $19.00 Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow by Maybelline, $6.99
Note: If you know you’re going to be photograph, avoid sheer and shimmer eyeshadows. Whilst it can look gorgeous and give you that sun kissed and healthy look in daylight you must remember that shimmer reflects light and if you’re using flash photography this isn’t something you’ll want as you’ll look like a ghost.
EYELINER
The formula is key—liquid and gel liners last longer than pencil. The beeswax found in pencil eyeliner slides when it heats up, that’s why liquid liners are preferred. But if you can’t part with your beloved pencil, trace over it with a matching eye shadow (use a slant-tip brush or the pointy tip of a foam applicator). The powder will help to set the pencil.
Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner (in Black) by Bobbi Brown, $24.00 Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Eyeliner by Marc Jacobs, $30.00 Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner by Stila, $20.00 Fluidline Eye-Liner Gel (in Blacktrack) by MAC, $16.00 Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner by Maybelline, $10.00 Infinite Liquid Eye Liner by Milani, $7.99 Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner by L’Oreal Paris, $6.50 HiP Color Truth Cream Eyeliner by L’Oreal, $3.99 Cream Eyeliner by e.l.f., $3.00 Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner by KOJI, $17.90
BLUSH & BRONZER
Pick a gel, liquid, or cream cheek stain; they’re all highly pigmented, which is why they last longer, but they go on sheer, so you can add color gradually until you get the intensity you’re after. If you prefer powder blush, try a slightly brighter shade than what you think you should use; it will fade throughout the day into something more subtle but still noticeable.
Créme Blush by Sonia Kashuk, $9.79 Minerals Blush by Milani, $8.99 Powder Blush by NYX, $5.00 Everlasting Blush by Kat Von D, $25.00 Powder Blush - Satins by MAC, $22.00 Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush by Tarte, $26.00 Rouge Cream Blush (in Natural) by NYX, $6.00 Cheek Stain by tarte, $30.00 Convertible Color by Stila, $25.00 Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer by tarte, $30.00 Natural Bronzer by Rimmel, $4.99
MASCARA
If you want to avoid runoff, go for a waterproof formula. Any kind of moisture, whether it’s humidity, tears, or sweat, makes non-waterproof mascara come off. Barely touch the wand to your lashes and apply in quick layers before the formula starts to dry.
Lash Power Mascara by Clinique, $16.50 Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara by Urban Decay, $20.00 LashBlast Volume Mascara by Cover Girl, $7.99 No Smudge Mascara by Bobbi Brown, $25.00 The Colossal Volum’ Express Waterproof Mascara by Maybelline, $7.75 LIPSTICK
Start by outlining and filling in your mouth with a pencil in a tone similar to your lipstick. The pencil helps anchor the color on top. Then apply the lipstick with a brush, which presses the pigment deeper into your lips than the tube or a finger does. A brush will also allow you to apply several thin layers (another key to long wear) without a gloppy result.
Velvet Matte Lip Pencil by NARS, $25.00 LipPerfection Lipcolor by CoverGirl, $5.99 Rouge Double Intensite by Chanel, $35.00 Semi Matte Lipstick by NARS, $26.00 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick by Kat Von D, $19.00 Color Lip Last by Sephora, $12.00 Superstay 24 Hour Color by Maybelline, $9.99
SET YOUR MAKEUP
Setting spray is designed to preserve your makeup for long periods of time. It keeps it from fading and sliding off your face, through heat, sweat and physical exertion. It has become a widely used product in the entertainment industry, favored by stylists in theatre, film and television. Regardless of the type of makeup you use, a setting spray will work to hydrate, refresh and set your makeup into place. It’s like a hair spray for your face, without actually using hair spray.
