I was watching a movie and there was a moment in particular that caught my eye. The character had to cast a spell that required human blood. So what did they do? They slices open the palm of their hand with a knife.
Really?! Why do they always slice open their palm?!
They always – always – use a knife to slice open one of their palms, then make a fist to dribble some blood into their magic potion.I’ve seen it happen everywhere, not just in films, but TV shows and I’ve read it in some books as well.
It’s painful. You’re constantly moving and stretching your hand, which takes it even longer to heal. There’s also a risk of infection because you’re constantly touching stuff — doorknobs, keyboards, and so on. It just ridiculous and impractical to see characters slice their palm open and act like it’s nothing, even when they’re using the same hand to sword fight or whatever else they do next.
Besides, no spells require that much blood, or at least they never specify. So why not just take a needle and draw blood from that? Or use the knife to make a little scratch/cut on the back of their hand? Or why not lightly cut the outside of your arm, or nicked your shoulder or something. At this point, anything sounds better than slicing your palm. It’s been overdone and it’s about time that the characters be smart about it.
