There are plenty of people who have the misfortune of getting sick, especially when they go to a convention. I’ve never had this problem; maybe it’s because I have a strong immune system or I’m just extra careful when I’m there?
But for those unlucky folks, there IS hope in avoiding that. I do know some people who tend to get easily sick during or after a convention. It’s not fun to get sick and no one likes it. That’s why I’m sharing these tips because they can help you avoid or at least lower your chances of catching a nasty bug. And the great thing about these tips is that they can be applied to any other situations as well.
1. Water. It keeps you hydrated. It also prevents you from losing your energy and getting headaches. It’s especially crucial for cosplayers to drink water because most costumes are heavy and hot to wear; more so in the warmer weather.
2. Balanced Meals. It can be difficult to find decent meals at conventions but it helps to bring your own food, or find somewhere near-by that serves healthy meals. It’s important to eat right because it can help you strengthen your immune system. That also means to avoid eating processed foods, such as ramen. If you must have junk food, they are fine as long as you have them WITH a healthy meal.
3. Sleep. Much like stress, exhaustion can also make you more susceptible to the airborne germs, especially in the colder months of the year. Make sure to get 6-8 hours of sleep nightly to help fend off any germs that may be attempting to bring down your immunity. Of course, with conventions they sometimes have programs schedule at night. If you know you’re not going to get much sleep at night, then try to take naps throughout the day.
4. Vitamins. Vitamins are made to supply your body with what it can’t get from just food. Certain supplements such as Vitamin C can be taken to prevent colds. Eating fruits with natural Vitamin C or taking supplements (according to recommended daily allowances) help to fend off germs. It is just one of the ways to help boost your immune system.
5. Practice good hygiene. Conventions contain hundreds upon hundreds (or even thousands) of people, so it’s not surprising that it’s a hot spot for germs. Many of those germs are passed on from other people onto objects, such as doorknobs, counters, money and so on. It truly does help to wash your hands constantly, use hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. Also keep your hands off your face, nose and eyes to help prevent the spread of germs.
