There is something that I noticed about majority of the films and TV shows that take place in a apocalypse or post-apocalyptic world that annoys me. It’s the fact that the casts is all squeaky clean and full of makeup. It’s unrealistic. It’s understandable that they could have found time and ways to stay clean (and to look good) but it should not be ALL the time.
It’s sad to see such a important detail being ignore because it’s not a difficult thing to do or to keep in mind. Water will be scares, especially clean water in a apocalyptic world. Whatever water that’s not already clean would need to be purify which will take time to boil the bacteria away. It will take even longer if large qualities of water is needed. Now, it sounds easy enough but when there’s a threat (zombies, aliens, crazy people, etc) around every corner, staying clean is nearly impossible.
Even worst is when you see makeup, dye/highlights and style hair.
…What.
I get the need to look great but that shouldn’t be a priority. This is mostly a problem commonly found with the female casts in these certain entertainment. How did they have time to keep their highlights (or dye color) up when their apocalypse doesn’t afford them ANY peace to do so? Why are their clothes so clean without a speck of dust or dirt, especially when they’re running around debris? Heck, why is their hair perfectly style and flowing free? How did they get it into such a style without the use of electricity? Or without hairspray and hair gels? Did they waste energy and attention into getting such items when food and weapons should come first? Besides, wouldn’t long flowing hair cause problems? Such as, being grabbed or caught on things?
The males casts don’t seem to have that much of a problem when it comes to this. It’s only noticeable when after a while that they shouldn’t be perfectly clean shaven. It’s much more believable when they grow a beard over time or have a scruff after neglecting it for some time. It’s actually nice when a show or movie contain a scene showing when and how the characters manage to stay clean or hint at it.
These things need to be taken into consideration when it comes to apocalypse theme entertainment. Readers want to feel pulled into the story, to care for the characters and the troubles they go through (even when it comes to achieving what was once a simple comfort such as a hot shower or bath). It’s hard to feel sympathetic for the characters when they seem to care more about how they look because they always manage to stay clean and beautiful despite the chaos around them. After all, why put so much effort into plotting out a believable story for a TV show or movie and yet neglect an important detail, especially one that can easily be done?
