Spoiler: Many people for some reason don’t understand (or know) the storyline of the series. Even those who have played it. Oh, and despite what some may believe there IS a story. Some parts of it do lack details and/or have some ‘plot holes’. I did my best to fill them in with whatever canon piece of information I can get in order to make it clear.
“Two Millenniums ago, there was a great war. Between the human world and the other…the Underworld. But somebody from the Underworld woke up to justice, and stood up against this legion, alone. His name was Sparda. Later, he quietly reigned the human world, and continued to preserve harmony, until his death. He became a legend, The Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda.” — Narrator, Devil May Cry
The demon that rebelled against his own kind did so for the sake of the human race. He was one of Mundus’ loyal generals, Sparda. He realized the tyranny and injustice of his master and rebelled, fighting to save humanity. He became a ray of hope for the humans. He alone defeated Mundus, the ruler of the Underworld — the Prince of Darkness. Sparda sealed him into a marble vault. What was left of Mundus’s armies retreated back into the Underworld. But knowing that they were still a threat to the humans, Sparda undergo a ritual — a spell that would close the gateway to the Underworld.
In order to do so Sparda had to use his own blood, along with the blood of a human priestess, in conjunction with his sword and a mystical amulet. He poured his demonic energy into his beloved sword, the Force Edge to act as one of the keys to close the door between realms, the Temen-ni-gru. This ritual robbed him of his power which became trapped on the other side.
Sparda’s activities over the next two thousand years are shrouded in legend, though it is understood that for a time after defeating Mundus, he ruled over the humans before vanishing. But Sparda later appeared in the twentieth century where he met and fell in love with a human woman named Eva, who bore his twin sons: Dante and Vergil.
On Dante and Vergil’s eighth birthday, Eva gave each boy the one half of Sparda’s Perfect Amulet. It was given as a gift to Eva by Sparda but she wanted to pass it down to them. Their names are engraved on the back of each half. But Mundus’ troops found a way through the human world. Sparda headed off to stop them but while he was gone his family was left unprotected. Unaware of the coming danger, Eva celebrated her sons’ birthday.
Demons ordered by Mundus attacked them. She hid Dante underneath two stones and told him to never come out, no matter what. She was killed, protecting her sons. Though it was unclear where Vergil was when they were attacked, but he was also considered killed too. Sparda never return and was presumed dead.
However, this part isn’t clear. There are some sources that say that Sparda was dead before his twin sons turned eight. That it was only after Sparda’s death, that Eva decided to give the two halves of the amulet to Vergil and Dante for their birthday. It was also a good enough reason for Mundus’ loyal demons to attack Sparda’s family in revenge, knowing that he was gone and they were left without protection. But there are also other sources that say that it happened differently, that Sparda just vanish at some point before his sons birthdays. And so Eva gave them the halves of the Perfect Amulet and it was towards the evening on Dante and Vergil’s eighth birthday that they were attacked.
After ten or eleven years have passed, that’s when Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening begins and the rest of the games as follow — Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 4, and Devil May Cry 2. Just click on the links to read the stories for each game. I did this to avoid making a huge post. Plus, it’ll help to avoid spoilers if people just wanted to understand Dante’s backstory and the legend of The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda.
