The Walking Dead: Zombies |

The zombies in The Walking Dead are still interesting. Even though they’re not like Romero’s zombies, which evolve over time. Robert Kirkman’s zombies just keep rotting, they do not evolve at all. However, that doesn’t mean that makes them any less of a threat. They’re not all mindless flesh eating corpses. There are some zombies that have a little more intelligence then the rest, which the show has demonstrated throughout it. Spoiler alert from this point on…
In the very first episode, Morgan’s wife gravitates to the house and looks through the peep hole and even messes around with the door handle. Also, there was a little girl zombie that Rick encounter and it was surprising to see her pick up the teddy bear.
In the second episode, we have a zombie picking up a rock and using it to help break the glass doors when they were at the department store. Then later on in the episode, another zombie hops the fence when chasing Glen and Rick.
In the first episode of the second season, there was a zombie that was smart enough to enter the RV to check for food. Andrea didn’t make any noise for it to investigate the RV in the first place. It was only after it was inside and about to leave, did Andrea drop the gun parts making noise and alerting it to her presence.
The zombies migrate, looking for food. They are smart enough to learn that when there’s no food source then it best to leave and go look for it.
The point of this is that, not all the zombies are stupid. There are a lucky few that retain their memories…well more like they have familiarization with the things and/or people around them.
From what I remember, in CDC episode Dr. Jenner said that “it invades the brain like meningitis: the adrenal glands hemorrhage, the brain goes into shutdown, then the major organs — then death.” A person pretty much dies and whoever they use to be is gone…but depending on the person (between 3 minutes to 8 hours), they come back to “life”. The brain restarts, just reactivating the brain stem and “it basically gets them up and moving…”.
The human part that makes them who they are doesn’t come back. But there has to be some part of themselves that knows what to do and it can’t be all instinct. After all, most of them know how to run, to search for food, to climb up the steps, to eat and do the things they do. They all need to have some level of intelligence/brain to function at all.
But the question is, are they all capable of being smart? If not, what determines those few zombies to be a little smarter then the rest? It can’t be that they were recently turned. The ones that show some intelligence appear to have been decaying for a rather long while.
Anyway, I find it interesting that the zombies aren’t all dumb. I find it believable that a few of them have more then just their brain stem reactivated. Maybe those functions aren’t fully activated but enough to make them do what they’re doing. Though there are some people that say it’s just inconsistency in the writing of the show. Who knows but for now, I rather like how the zombies are behaving.
