One of the things that I was concern with, was when Ninja Theory decided to make their Dante a half demon and half angel. I knew that they would change things around because it is a reboot, in which previous continuity is erase and it restarts a fictional universe from the beginning.
In this new alternative universe Dante struggles with what it means to be the child of a demon and an angel. My concern was that he has NO humanity. In Devil May Cry, the original series it’s a big theme. Dante’s humanity is what made him stronger than full blooded demons. Demons have superior physical strength and have magical abilities but they lack something very important.
A “heart”. Humans have the willpower to succeed dispite impossibe odds, demons don’t. The reason Sparda was so powerful is that he had a heart. He found within himself the traits that seperate humans from demons. It was that something that gave him the extra strength that went further than normal for a demon.
So imagine a person that’s half demon and half human. They would have access to power that no human would ever have. But because they’re also part human, they can reach levels that demons can’t reach, unless they find a heart within themselves.
If Dante was not half-human in the original canon he would have never been able to defeat Vergil. Vergil was far more skilled in using his power but rejected his heart. He was relying on only half of who he is against Dante, who accepted both halves of his nature. If the original Dante was half-angel, Vergil would have been too making their power the same. When two people have the same level of power and the same basic nature the one with more skill (Vergil) is definitely going to win.
That’s because in the Devil May Cry 3 Manga angels and demons were once the same thing. And so far the manga holds its status as (unfinished) canon to the original series. So if they were once the same, then it’s possible that over time they wanted to differentiate themselves. “Angels” probably felt self righteous and believe that their nature wasn’t as “evil” as demons. It’s also possible that they had a better chance at finding their ‘hearts’ then demons would.
But overall, there’s not enough information about what DmC’s angels are like. It’s also unknown whether or not Ninja Theory will include that major theme (having a heart; love, caring, compassion, etc) in the reboot. But if they do, I hope that they’ll define what angels are and how they came to be, basically what their origins are. It would allow gamers to understand better the alternative universe and Dante’s life/personality.
Honestly, I can see how being half angel can work in place of being half human (especially if they make angels separate entity from demons) but I prefer the latter. Why? Because Dante being half human made gamers feel closer to him. Gamers are humans with their own struggles in society. So when they see Dante struggling with a part of himself that’s not human in a human world, it gives gamers a connection with him. They understand how it’s like to not fit in completely or to not be “normal”. For some it may not be the same way as Dante but they get it.
Human emotions isn’t just a human thing. It can be achieve by demons if they look within themselves. Hence the reason why humans are capable of great feats even when they have limitation. It’s also a reason why the original series is called Devil May Cry. I just worry that Ninja Theory won’t do a good job in building up that alternative universe well, especially when they add in angels which seem to have a big part in their Dante’s character.
T.L.D.R. This is just my musings on Dante of DmC on him being half demon and half angel. I can see that working but at the same time I prefer the original concept of Dante being half human instead of half angel.
