Is it just me or do certain writers act bitchy and/or defensive when you correct them?
I think it's the age of the authors that post on the website that determines their maturity, especially when it comes to receiving constructive criticism. Majority of them are young and to them all they care about is getting their stories out, getting reviews, and they don't care about grammar and spelling, because they have enough of that in school. So they get "butthurt" when people point out their problems and they take it as a attack when it's not. It doesn't even matter if the reviewer was really polite in pointing out mistakes either, to them it's,"OMG I hatez yoo! Yoo a stoopid flamer!".
I've encounter my share of writers that had such a high ego simply because they had so many reviews all saying "love the story, update please". None of those reviews were real reviews, just mindless fangirl/fanboy praises that boost their ego and made them think that they are actually great writers. So when they see only one or two people actually giving them advice in how they can improve their writing skills or story, they take it as a flame. They ignore it, using the excuse that the reviewer is just jealous of their "popularity" because of their story.
I learned long ago that it's best to pick and choose those that you wish to really help. Really, the best thing someone can do is just avoid stories that don't ask for help to improve in their author's notes. Those that do ask, actually WANT the help and they are more humble and willing to take that advice in order to improve themselves. Or better yet, check out the forums and look for a thread that specifically has authors posting links to their stories and asking for people's honest opinion/advice on it.
Doing that save me from a lot of unnecessary drama and trouble.
