How To Get Started In Fanfiction? |

Getting started in the fanfiction world is actually pretty easy and doesn't require much work, just an interest in something and decent writing abilities.
First things first, think of a movie, book, TV show, cartoon, comic, anime, manga, video game, or whatnot that you would like to write about. Whatever it is, make sure you know it well and the characters. When you're positive that you know all about it, devise a plot, a setting and any possible extra characters (OCs) of your imagination, that you might wish to add. However, be sure if they are absolutely needed. Made-up characters that are not originally apart of the world you're writing for do not always make a story better, and some are even frowned in some communities for a number of reasons.
Anyway, a good way to create a plot is to ask yourself a what-if question. For example, it could be: "What if so-and-so hadn't died?" Or "What if so-and-so and so-and-so had gotten married?" Or "What if so-and-so was put into this situation?" Or "What if this happen to so-and-so instead of so-and-so?" Or "What about if this didn't happen? Would so-and-so change? What if the story took place in another time period? What if so-and-so were turned into an elf, vampire, demon, human, dragon, etc.? Would they be the same person? What about the other characters?"
As you can see, asking yourself questions is very helpful because you'll really get into the details of a story and come up with several ideas for a plot. Whatever your idea for a story is, you can then begin to write it in the most descriptive, attractive, and most appealing way possible.
After you are done with sections of your story or your entire story, revise and proofread your story to make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors. You might want to search for a beta reader, or someone who will look over your work for you to help improve it.
I also suggest that you check out writer's guides specifically written for fanfiction writers because they do help to make sure that your story is good. And it doesn't hurt to check out the forums too, where people rant about their fanfiction pet peeves. It's a helpful way for fanfic writers to get into the readers mind and know what they dislike seeing when they read fics. You can use that knowledge to make your story appealing to them and better.
For example: Readers hate seeing summaries with "I suck at summaries", "The title says it all" or no summary at all. It's worst when no summary is paired with "I suck at summeries" because it gives the readers the impression that the story itself is lacking. After all, the writer didn't put any effort to at least try writing a summary. The summary is important because it's the first thing readers see and if there isn't one then they don't bother checking out the story.
So just knowing that helps writers make sure that they at least try because it's better then nothing. You want to look professional, like you know what you're doing, that you're confident and know how to write (whether or not you're good at it).
When you got your story out of the way, the next step is to post it online. That's also known as publishing your work. There are numerous websites specifically meant to publish fanfiction and many of them are free. Majority of the people go to Fanfiction.net because it's the largest and most known fanfiction site. However many don't like it because the terrible quality of fanfiction on it and so some search the net for a better site. Such as Lunaescence Archives, they moderated the stories, meaning they make sure each and every story posted is written well because they care about quality not quantity.
