It felt like any other day when I went on Youtube and I looked up the trailers of new video games. The one that caught my attention the most was Devil May Cry. I nearly jumped up in excitement when I saw the title but I held it in because I wanted to see it first. I was pretty excited while I was watching the video because it looked pretty cool and I found it interesting that there is a new character. Of course in the end of the video I realize that it's not a new character but actually Dante.
....WHAT?!
That was all I could think of for a few moments until I started going into denial and thinking that Capcom purposely wanted their fans to cry and rage. So I started looking into the information, learning that it's not a Devil May Cry 5 but instead DmC, a reboot. At the time there wasn't much information other than that it's DmC and being developed by Ninja Theory so I wasn't aware that it was a reboot. Because of that, one of my theories was that it's not Dante but a guy that thinks he is, like a clone. Because the Dante we know doesn't have black hair, doesn't smoke because he dislikes it/finds it uncool (and yes, it was mention in the DMC novel) and it looked like this guy was in a asylum being experimented or something. I was pretty much in denial thinking my theory to be real but it fell apart when I heard it's a reboot and the developers, Ninja Theory did an interview about it.
Basically, Capcom was having a hard time making profits because the Japanese design and aesthetics are no longer fashionable and have limited reach in Western markets. They decided to look to Western studios to revitalize their brands and help them appeal to a wider audience. In that case they were the ones that approach the developers, Ninja Theory to give the Devil May Cry franchise a new look. At first Ninja Theory designed the character to look similar to the Dante we know and love, but Capcom wasn't interested because they felt that his look was outdated and told them to be creative and go wild. They wanted something that was different, something that stood out from the franchise and felt more believable.
Taking that into consideration Ninja Theory fleshed out the dark-haired, smoking teenage Dante. From what I've been hearing they are focusing on bringing it down to the "human level" which means making it realistic as much as they possibly can with the video game without making it unrecognizable. Such as, having a limit on the unlimited bullets in Dante's guns though I'm not sure if they're really going to do that. Changing his appearance because according to Ninja Theory the Dante we know dressed as he is with the red coat, white hair, two guns and carrying a huge sword would be laughed as if he "walked into any bar outside of Tokyo."
Again, they're are focusing on Westernizing it and making it believable to us. I find that silly because any major video game character I can think that would ever walk into a bar will look out of place but the fans don't care and it doesn't matter. Each major character are all place in settings that fit them, and Dante is no different. The world of Devil May Cry is not like ours in the slightest, and neither is anyone's fashion sense.
I'm not going to judge this just yet because this is a reboot and it's way to early to decide whether or not this game is worth your money or just an disappointment. Besides, I'm hoping that this won't turn out so bad because Ninja Theory is known for being accomplished storytellers. So they might have a very good reason as to why Dante doesn't look like the way we know him as and I have a feeling it has something to do with his Tony Redgrave days. As for the gameplay...that has yet to be known but again, I hope it doesn't disappoint.
