This World is Bigger Than You and I
In a rural little village located somewhere in a rather fantastical world, there was a young woman who was known for her beauty-- so known, in fact, that the Swamp King, a great toad living in the bog near the village, pursued her as well, and eventually kidnapped her and forced her to become his Queen.
Using the King's magic, the two were able to have many children-- much to the Queen's disgust-- and these children were incredibly disfigured crosses between frogs and humans, all with tadpole tails. When the children turned 13, the King would snap their tails off, and they would soon become akin to bipedal frogs.
One year, the Queen discovered one of the children, a girl, had nothing but webbed feet. She asked to raise it, and the King, excited that she finally seemed interested in bringing up their kids, gladly allowed it.
The next year, another child, a boy, had only the eyes of a frog. She asked to raise him as well, and the King had no objections.
The Queen raised these two as if they were her own human children, and she taught them all about the world outside the swamp-- and when it came time for the older of the two to have her tail snapped off, she sent them both away to live the life of freedom that had been stolen away from her all the years ago. She told the King they had been eaten by swamp crocodiles, and the both of them mourned-- he, for the apparent loss of his children, and she, because she would never see them again.
With nothing but the rags on their backs and the things they had learned, the children set off to explore the world.
They encounter many strange places and many strange people and learn how beautiful, and vicious, the world can be.
