Part twoooooo~
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then we wished them all a happy birthday...
"Brother!"
Valentine let out a small noise of surprise when his sister tackled him from behind and circled her arms around him in a hug. He giggled, looking over his shoulder at the four-year old. "Heehee~ Yes, dear sister~?"
Christmas looked up at him with a smile and bright eyes. "Your birthday's coming up right?"
"Mmhmm." Valentine affirmed, nodded his head with a grin. His eyes dimmed a bit though. "I'm gonna be eight on the fourteenth~" He tilted his head and stared at his little sister. "Why'd you wanna know?"
Christmas blinked, then gave her brother a smile. "It's a secret~" She giggled, letting go of her brother and running off.
Valentine blinked, watching her go. "Little sister's are so weird~" He giggled and headed off to his room.
'My birthday's next week... huh...' He really didn't care. It was just like any other day anyways. His parents didn't celebrate his day of birth like they did Christmas'. Not that he blamed his sister. Valentine sighed, shutting the door behind him. He glanced around his room.
'Where did I put that knife...'
---
Valentine started blankly at his bleeding wrists. "Happy birthday to me..." the pale eight-year old murmured, before digging the knife further into his skin. He didn't hear the footsteps hurrying up the stairs, now did he hear his bedroom door open.
"Broth‒"
Valentine did however hear that, and the gasp the followed it. Something hit the ground behind him. He turned, eyes landing on the wrapped gift sitting at his sister's feet. Valentine's eyes moved up, until they met Christmas' wide blue ones.
"B-Brother...?" The girl stood there for a second, then rushed forward and dropped to her knees in front of Valentine. She grabbed his bleeding wrists, staring at them with wide eyes. She also took notice of the knife clutched in one of her brother's hands She looked up at his face. "Y-You... Did you... do this to... yourself?" she spoke slowly, as if she couldn't comprehend her brother's actions.
Valentine was silent for a moment, staring down at his wrists. A giggle escaped him after a moment, breaking the silence. "Isn't it pretty~? Heehee!"
"B... Brother?"
"The blood~" Valentine continued, as if Christmas hadn't said anything. "It's just so red~ Isn't it?" He looked up, locking gazes with his sister. He giggled again. "So pretty~"
Christmas stared at him in shock. He was grinning and acting normal, as if he hadn't just been cutting his wrists! Something seemed a bit... off about him, though. "You... Why would you even..." Christmas couldn't finish the question.
Valentine shrugged. "No-one would care anyways~ Everyone haaaates me~" He watched as the girl froze, then raised her hand, as if she was going to slap him. "Heehee... See~? Even you... hate me..." His voice cracked at the end, and he couldn't figure out why.
Christmas' hand fell back down and her shoulders started shaking. The girl burst into tears and flung herself at Valentine, hugging him tightly. "Stupid! Stupid! Y-You're an idiot, b-brother...!" she cried, burying her face into his shoulder. "I-I don't hate you... You're my b-big brother... I could n-never hate y-you..."
Valentine's eyes had widened, and he just sat there. Finally, he slowly brought his arms around his sister. "D-Don't cry..." he said, trying to grin. Why was his vision blurry? "I don't wanna see my little sister... cry..." His voice cracked again.
Christmas pulled back slightly, to look at her brother's face. She moved a hand to wipe against Valentine's cheek. "You're crying too, big brother..."
A sob broke past Valentine's lips, and the eight-year old finally broke down and buried his face into his sister's hair. He clung to her tightly as more sobs escaped him.
"Happy birthday, big brother... I love you."
---
Finally, he had some to care for... someone who cared for him in return...
But, on Christmas' fifth brirthday...
---
Valentine stared at the doctor with wide eyes.
"What... what do you mean?!" Veroncia demaned, looking grief-stricken.
The doctor gave a weary, sad sigh. "I'm terribly sorry... but there's nothing we can do for her... Ever since her birth, your child has been a very sickly, weak child..." He ran a hand through his hair, a remorseful look on his face. "She... probably won't even make it through the night..."
Veroncia gasped, a hand flying to her mouth. She looked like she was about to start crying right then and there.
Adair put a hand on his wife's shoulder in an attempt to comfort her, but he didn't look too good himself.
"Here... You probably wish to speak to her..." The doctor ushered both parents into the room Christmas was being kept in. He gave Valentine a quick glance, before going inside the room himself.
Valentine was still frozen in place, the doctor's words replaying through his head.
Won't even make it through the night... Won't even make it through the night... Won't even make it through the night...
The black-haired boy slumped into the nearest chair.
---
After his parents and the doctor had left the room, Valentine went in. He stiffened at the sight of his pale, thin little sister. She looked so fragile... "C-Christmas..." His voice was hoarse, but he forced a grin. When his sister turned her gaze towards him, he flinched. Her once bright blue eyes were dull; almost lifeless.
"Valentine..." Christmas smiled weakly.
Valentine moved closer to the bed. "H-How're you feeling...?" He reached out and pet her dark locks of hair. The black-haired girl stopped him though, by grabbing his hand.
"Brother..." Christmas looked him in the eyes. "I know I don't have much longer..."
Valentine stiffened again. "W-what? Don't say such things, heehee... You'll be fine..."
Christmas ignored his words, keeping a firm grip on his hand. "Big brother... Promise me one thing, please..." He didn't say anything, which the girl took as her cue to continue. "Promise me... that you'll continue to live..."
Valentine looked a bit surprised at the request, but quickly masked his shock with another forced grin. "Heehee... You know that I can't..." Christmas' tearful eyes made him stop. He felt her grip on his hand tighten.
"Brother... please... for me..."
After a moment, Valentine sighed. "Alright..." He gave his sister a small grin. "How could I say no to my little sister?"
Christmas still didn't look convinced. "Brother... promise me..."
"Alright, alright... I promise." There it was again. His vision was getting blurry.
Christmas smiled, leaning back. "Thank you, big brother..." She shut her eyes. The heart-monitor let out a long beep after a few minutes.
Valentine was still holding the girl's limp hand, his head bowed. His shoulders shook as silent sobs escaped him.
'Happy birthday, little sister... I love you too.'
I think my friend said, "Don't forget to smile".
