Ugh... what a week.
It all started on Saturday. My dad, Dalndox and I went to Chicago to check out a college for me there. Ended up enrolling, which is good for me. I was excited, but then my day suddenly got worse. It started to poor rain like you wouldn't believe! So now, because we had to run in it like mad people (especially to get across such busy roads), I have a painful blister on the side of my foot. I can't even wear shoes.
Anyways, when I got back home, I found my laptop flooded with pop-up spam! Really, it wasn't uncommon, as months before, Dalndox accidentally allowed this adware program to download onto my system. It wasn't entirely his fault, as I hadn't warned him, and it had been harassing both of my parents' laptops as we're all on the same network.
At first, it started out small, and I downloaded Malwarebyte's Anti Malware software, which seemed to work for a while - I was wrong.
It never got rid of anything in my Registry. Of course, this is to be expected, but how does one expect to do any business as an anti-virus company if they're not intending to fix the problem at it's core? Even if it was the free software, it should delete it as it advertises itself as free on the website. It's ridiculous!
So after months with struggling over it, it finally whooped my laptop's a**. With Malwarebytes, I was able to find 9 total trojans as a result of that one adware downloaded months ago. One of them was a hijacker, which totally ******** up my laptop's ability to read my profile. It kept saying "cannot retrieve local profile~." It then only recognized my profile as a new one, with all of my files, programs and settings gone.
As my only way of backing up images was through Photobucket (which was very tedious, as my laptop does not like their bulk uploader), as well as through e-mail to myself for my more ecchi images that would be flagged easily (I did this for written documents as well), this nearly broke my spirit. I wanted so badly just to rip out the hardrive and smash it with my dad's sledgehammer outside. With some quick thinking, though, I did a system search of the laptop, and my files were found floating in space. I remembered it happening sometime ago when my big computer was virused, and wouldn't allow me to do simple things like open certain windows up, or change my desktop.
Luckily, my dad had a copy of Windows XP, so we're currently trying to download that back on, completely new. Nothing will be left on my laptop memory-wise, except for what comes pre-packaged in the setup CD. I read that that will eradicate all traces of the trojans and adware, so I'm crossing my fingers.
Unfortunately, I am unsure of my music being backed up, as it was once moved onto my dad's big computer, because I always feared loosing it. It's not a big collection, but most are songs that I were able to download by pure chance, and am unsure of being able to find again. Also, it means that I have to redownload all programs that I had on there before. I wrote down all of the ones that were important, as well as the Firefox add-ons that I really liked.
Wish my laptop luck on a speedy recovery! Because if it doesn't, I'm going to fail my ISearch paper, which makes up most of my grade, has taken me since the beginning of January to write, and is due this Friday at the beginning of the day!
