Chapter 22- Body and Mind

Maya told me the plan that we would use to get out of the cells and I nodded in agreement. We were going to use controlling. When Maya and I were younger, we would read books about magic and controlling, though we spent most of our time on magic, since it was stronger and most of the times more useful than controlling. Magic concentrates on the mind and soul, while controlling concentrated mostly on just the body and mind. Since there was a magic barrier around the cells, we could only use controlling to get out. Maya instructed that she would teach Jason controlling the element of fire, while I would use controlling of darkness.

"Hey Lin" I stood up

"Hm?" he stood up, following my actions

"Maya figured out how were going to get out of here" I took a few breaths, getting a weird look from Lin.

"Okay, shoot."

I explained to him how controlling worked, and how magic worked and told him the plan. He and I would sing a song to our shadows, beautiful enough to please them, to do our bidding. I hummed him the song, then by going verse by verse, he would repeat after me. He repeated after me for a while, until I was sure he had it memorized by heart.

"So is this why you always hum?" he asked, probably going over the tune in his head

"Yeah. Mom taught me all sorts of songs for everything, and that's how I remember them" I took a few breaths.

"Don't forget I'm going to be singing" I looked at him and he nodded

"I'll count us in" I felt my heart pounding agenst my chest as the candle light danced in the darkness

I closed my eyes, tapping my foot on the ground counting down from three. I opened my mouth, as the words flew out of my mouth, rolling off my tongue. I could hear Lin humming next to me as I sang the words and I glanced at him. He looked completely shocked. I didn't sing that bad, did I? I gave him a smile and he smiled back at me, still humming the tune in time with mine, exactly an octave lower. The song had very dark lyrics in another language than English, but it mostly spoke about the shadows and the darkness of the world. The song came to an end and Lin's and my shadows came up, as if they were coming alive and 'wrapped their long arms wrapped around our body, almost as if they were possessive. I glanced at Lin who looked freaked out, and gave him a reassured smile.

"What would you like us to do?" My shadow's voice rang in my ear.

"Break the bars" I replied, my voice exactly the same as the shadow

"Yess" The two shadows replied in unison, let go of us and went to the bars, breaking them instantly and then fading back onto the ground behind us

"Let's go to Maya" I spoke, walking through the broken bars, leaving Lin a bit shocked

"Uh, Yeah" Lin quickly followed me and walked past me so I could follow him

"Your voice is beautiful" Lin whispered from front of me

"Thank you" I looked at the ground

"Why don't you sing more?" I saw Lin look behind his shoulder at me

"For that reason. If I were to accidentally sing a whole song, who know what would come up?" I saw Lin nod his head once

"We have to be quiet now" Lin whispered to me

We walked down several corridors, making a bunch of turns. I don't know how Lin could remember his way around this place, it was huge. We walked down one hallway, with large pictures of men and women, who were all beautiful and handsome. Were these Lin's family members? I stopped and looked at one picture of a woman next to a larger man in a large frame, they looked very happy. I inspected the picture for a couple minutes and heard Lin stand next to me.

"That was the only portrait of my mom and my dad" he stared blankly at the picture

"Come on, we have to get your sister and her boyfriend" Lin called, making me jump. I nodded and quickly ran after him. He slowly opened a large stone door, revealing darkness, and melted gates.

"You did it Maya!" I cried, running in her direction

Maya ran to me, pulling me into a hug, as I hugged her back. It had been at least two days that we've been close or even hugged. It felt wonderful to hug her again

"I hate to break this reunion..." started Lin. "But it's a matter of time before someone comes down here to check on us."

I glanced at Lin, but nodded and followed him out of the dungeon. We walked back down the same paths, this time taking different routs around the castle.

"Let's get out of here." Maya whispered and I felt my heart pang agenst my chest.

Lin started slightly running down another hallway, as we all followed him. I could feel the exit coming closer, telling me to leave this place, but there was one thought that made me come to a stop. Jason and Maya quickly ran passed me and turned to look at me

"Candace what are you doing let's go!" Jason whispered

I ignored him and turned my head around to face the way we came from. It didn't feel right to leave right now. I felt my eyes tear up

"Candace!" Maya seethed at me

"What about mom?!" I stared straight at Maya's eyes. Isn't that our goal or something?

"It's no use! The wizard has her under his spell and he's the only one who can break it, but he's under the slaves curse! There is no way we can do anything!" said Lin. I glanced at him, giving him a frown.

I kept my eyes on Lin. Wasn't he supposed to be on my side? I stood on my spot, not moving. I shifted my glaze to Maya again, wiping some of my tears that went down my cheeks. Didn't she want to save mom too? Maya suddenly walked to my side, leaving the guys with an appalled look.

"Are you coming?" She asked

Jason paused for a second, but walked over to Maya's side. I looked at Lin and looked at the ground next to him. Maybe he didn't want to come. I saw him take a step and I looked up at him. He simply smiled at me, and walked over.

"So what now?" I asked, now that everyone was here

Before anything else was said, a voice interrupted all our thoughts.

"Now you'll never leave this place." a female voice said behind us.

I froze on the spot. Her voice was the same as it was four years ago, but it sounded monotone, as if she'd never seen the outside world. What had the dark lord done to her? I turned to face her, my eyes still a bit damp. It was mom.
