[Start from Chapter one!]
Chapter 8
Winter thankfully was coming to a quick close; spring would officially start in three days and I couldn’t be happier. Maya watched over me, making sure that I made a full recovery during the past month, which made me happy since I didn’t want to go outside anyway. Maya made Neva scout around the area a lot, not that she really minded because she’d do just about anything to run into Kai, though she never did run into him. Even though I almost died to her expense to be happy with Kai, I guess I didn’t really mind. Those two had something going on between each other, something magical that I really couldn’t explain. She deserved to be with that butterfly, even if I wanted to kill the guy that he lived with.

One thing I couldn’t believe though was the fact that Maya had to use a potion made of animal crap and mosquito blood just to ‘wake me up’. In the middle of the night, I’d end up waking up because the smell of animal crap lingered around my nose. I complained to Maya how I couldn’t wait to run around outside to get this horrid smell off my body and to feel the fresh spring air that I missed so much.

“Well in three days you can do that,” Maya laughed reassuringly.

“Has the snow almost gone?” I asked hopefully.

Maya nodded.

“Only small patches of slush and puddles. Then you, Neva and I need to get to work on the spring cleaning!”

“I’ve never heard you excited for cleaning,” I joked.

“Oh shut up, at least its spring you little t**t,” Maya said, poking my forehead.

I rolled my eyes and brought the covers up to my neck.

“Goodnight Maya,” I yawned and fell asleep peacefully.

Xo

Spring came three swift days later and I was finally allowed out of the bed. The days casually began to get longer, meaning that I didn't have to be home at such an early time. I finally got out of bed, allowing Neva to flutter onto my shoulder as we yawned simultaneously. I changed into my more spring and summer outfit, which consisted of a long strapless top that flared over my short skirt which sat at my mid thigh. I went outside to see that Maya was already mostly done her dusting, meaning I had a lot to catch up on.

“Stop waking up so early, it can’t be good for you!” I teased.

She stuck her tongue out at me and used her food to push a bucket of water towards me.

“Clean the bathroom and floors please,” Maya instructed I rolled my eyes.

“What?” I whined, why I have to clean the floors!?

“Dust could get you sick. Since when has soap and water done that?” Maya asked wisely with a grin on her face.

I groaned and picked up the sponge and bucket reluctantly and went to fill it up in the sink with warm water. Neva flew off my shoulder, probably going to Maya to ask for something to do to help out.

“You want to participate too Neva?” I heard Maya giggle.

“Alright, open the windows and drapes please?”

“How come you give me a command and she gets asked nicely?” I yelled from the kitchen

“Because although Neva is like a sister, she’s not my sister. Go get to work!” She commanded.

I grunted, turning the tap water off and picked up the bucket that was now filled with water. When we do the annual spring cleaning, Maya usually does the floors and I usually dust the hut but I guess what she said was true, dust could get me sick. How or why, I’m not sure but you never know what might happen. Like you could get poisoned by some random b*****d for no reason. Better be careful out there.

Xo

I finally finished washing the floors, having to wash some areas about three times before it was completely clear of dust and what not. It wasn’t the best work that I had done but considering how I haven’t had a reason to wash the floors before, it was the best I could do. I teasingly picked on Maya’s work, saying that she missed some spots in some high and seriously unreachable areas that just had to be cleaned because they were cob web infested. Besides that, it was lunchtime and Neva and I looked at each other knowingly of what we wanted for lunch

“Why don’t we have a picnic?” I suggested. “We haven’t had one in sooooo long it would be soooooo nice don’t you think?”

Maya just rolled her eyes and I giggled.

“That may have worked when you were a kid and with mom, but the begging will get annoying after a while,” She said but I knew that she was just as excited for the picnic as Neva and I were.

“What kind of food would you like?” She asked and I felt a smile appear across my face.

Neva and I both jumped at her question excitedly.

Xo

We decided to have the picnic at the field, which I happily suggested. The weather outside was perfect for a picnic there and besides, where else would we have a picnic? In the forest? We talked about small things like boys, and cloths and what not, pretty much anything that came to mind until Maya asked a much more serious question.

“What did you mean when you said that Mom says hi?” Maya ask curiously and I raised an eyebrow at her.

“I meant what I said?” I answered not really sure what exactly I meant.

Maya looked at me like she didn’t understand my answer and I laughed awkwardly.

“I don’t really remember. Mom was with me and she helped me wake up, what happened before was somewhat blank,” I said playing with the hem of my long shirt.

I didn’t want to mention the fact that I had tried to find mom at the Dark Lord’s castle, on my own. She’d flip. Even though I know I talked with mom, I couldn’t exactly remember everything that she said, besides that she loves Maya and I.

“Okay,” She said, falling for my answer. “And who was that guy that poisoned you?”

“One of the Dark Lord’s henchmen,” I blurted out before I could really think about it.

“So he made you follow him?” She asked like she was confirming some thought she had about him. I shook my head.

“No! I went alone cause..” I didn’t bother to finish my sentence and took a bite out of my sandwich, trying to avoid the topic.

Maya grunted in annoyance.

“What is with you? Why can’t you tell me why you were going there or what the whole thing about mom was? Are you scared I’m going to do something about it?” She yelled.

I paused and looked down to the grassy ground then raised my head to look Maya in the eye.

“I just… don’t remember everything. It’s so annoying to me because I know it was something important and maybe about mom or… I don’t know,” I sighed.

“You don’t remember a lot from that day?” She asked, clarifying.

“I remember wanting to go to the Dark Lords castle for some reason, I remember getting accidentally cut by that guy, I remember when I was knocked out I met up with mom some place… but I don’t remember what we talked about,” I sniffed, more than curious why I couldn’t remember what mom and I talked about.

“What’s my favorite color?” Maya asked suddenly and I rolled my eyes.

“Blue” I answered immediately without even thinking. Maybe she was testing me or something.

Maya sighed in relief and I looked at her curiously as she handed me the last cracker and stood up from her space on the blanket.

“I think I should go clean up the church. You can pack up here okay?” She asked and I nodded in agreement as she began to dust off her apparent white shorts.

“Pull your top up while you’re at it,” I teased and burst into laughter when Maya realized that I was just messing with her. She grumbled something to herself quietly but I was laughing too hard to figure out what she said.

Xo

I finished putting everything into the basket that Maya and I had and fell onto the soft grass looking up at the colorless and cloud filled sky. I felt myself doze off under the rays of the sun but quickly opened my eyes as I heard a thumping noise come from the outskirts of the forest.

“So, we meet again,” I heard a voice call to me and I sighed. Not him again.

“What do you want now?” I asked bitterly, standing up as he grew closer.

I could feel his eyes wandering around my body and I instantly wished I had brought my cloak with me.

“I wanted to apologize,” he paused and looked back at my face. “For poisoning you,”

“Like hell you’re sorry,” I replied agitatedly.

“No, I mean it, I’m sorry. I would have told you sooner.. but I had a feeling I would have died if I did,” he said almost sounding sincere and a bit worried.

I just rolled my eyes. I imagined Maya going at him with her ice spear and whooping his sorry a**.

“Right. Well leave here before I kill you,”

“Like you could kill me,” he said arrogantly and I sighed. Like he even knew what I was capable of.

I looked at Neva and Kai, who were fluttering around each other just like last time.

“Neva, lets go,” I said unwillingly. As much as I wanted her to be with the other butterfly, I can’t say I trust the man in front of me.

“But look how happy they are,” argued the man, now wanting them to be together.

“You should of thought of that before you tried to kill me,"

“I said I didn’t mean to kill you. I didn’t think you’d slap me,” he said and put his fingers to his cheek where I slapped him about a month ago.

“I told you not to try any funny business!” I argued, now getting irritated.

“You look much cuter with a smile,” he resorted with a smile of his own. I didn’t really find this to be much of a smiling time.

“Neva..” I said again, ignoring his comment.

She looked unwilling to leave Kai but she flew onto my head, waving to him. I made a mental note to make a special meal for Neva, as my apology from taking her away from her love.

“Wait! Don’t go!”

“What then?”

“I’m still sorry,” he said simply and I shook my head, as in to not accept the apology.

I turned around and began heading back for the forest, and back for the hut. As soon as I knew I was out of his line of view I came to a stop and held Neva in my hands.

“You really like Kai, don’t you?” I asked.

She nodded excitedly and I giggled, her gesture suddenly making me feel less tense.

“Sorry for taking you away from him,“ I paused then continued. "Just being around him makes me feel too nervous,"

She shook her head and in her squeaking language told me that she understood my feelings, and that she had been meeting Kai secretly while we were sleeping in the middle of the night.

“You’ve been doing what?!” I laughed and petted her fuzzy head. “I never knew I had such a rebellious butterfly,” I joked and placed her on a tree branch.

“Do you mind if you fly home yourself? I need some time to think about things, and find a punishment for you.” I winked and she nodded, flying onto my face to give me a hug.

“Thanks,” I giggled. “I’ll see you when I get home,” I said and before I knew it, she was off in the distance.

I turned into a bird and began to fly through the trees and into the sky. Some how flying always helped clear out my thoughts which I really needed. I tried remembering what mom and I spoke about, but honestly nothing came to mind besides what I had told Maya earlier. Why couldn’t I remember what happened? It was like my memory was wiped clean.

I suddenly felt a strong gust of wind come out of nowhere, pushing and shoving me in the air. I felt my head start to spin but tried getting myself back upright, with no avail and I began to fall towards the ground. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground, a shot of pain running through my nerves from my wing. I chirped loudly, I guess what would be equal to a scream, at the pain. I tried pulling my wing out from under my small body – it was in a position I knew wings weren’t supposed to be in but it hurt too damn much, meaning it was probably sprained or something. How would I explain this one to Maya?

I suddenly heard foot steps coming close to where I was, and I really hoped it was Maya. I tried to turn to figure out who it was that was coming towards my direction but before I could make out any faces, I felt two hands cup me, holding me gently.

“Hey there, its okay, I wont hurt you,” came a voice that was all too familiar.

I tried flapping away from the b*****d that held me in his hand, but chirped again at the pain that my fall inflicted.

“Your wing is injured, let me help,” he said demandingly and I let out a sigh. There really wasn't much I could do at this time.

“I have to move your wing, so this might hurt a bit,” I felt him take a hold of my wing with two fingers, and begin to move it forward.

It was like a thousand needles were being stabbed into my wing over and over again. I tried to stay as still and as quiet as I could, but I wasn’t too sure how effective I was.

“See? Was that so bad?” he asked and I used my beak to stab his hand.

He laughed, petting my feathery body tenderly. I closed my eyes, the warmth of his hand soothing the pain. We stayed like this for a couple minutes and I felt my face get hot with the close contact between me and the guy. I was thankful that he couldn’t see my blush. I looked at my wing again, to see that he was wrapping a cloth around my wing that had the letter “L” on it. Was that the first letter to his name?

“It’s just so your wing can recover,” he said and tied it off.

Maybe he wasn’t so bad after all. He set me gently on the ground and I tried to open my wing, but ended up falling onto the ground from being so flustered. He chuckled, picking me up again and setting me upright on the ground. I chirped happily, the pain was completely gone! I looked at him and stared into his color-less eyes, almost intrigued by this man but shook it off and nodded my head for a thanks.

“No problem,” he smiled and I flew off back to the hut.

I saw the hut come into view and I turned back into a human, my blush still very apparent. Maybe he wasn’t as much of a b*****d as I thought, and was actually…. Nice. I looked down at my arm, the bandage still wrapped tightly. I opened the hut door, only to be faced with a flick on the forehead then a palm on my forehead, like I was being checked to see if I had a fever.

“Why do you feel warm? Have you gotten sick again?” Maya asked worriedly.

“No! It’s warm out and I ran back so I wouldn’t be out at night!” I exclaimed, covering up why my face was really red. I hid my bandaged hand behind my back, so she wouldn’t see it.

She let it slide, which I was thankful for.

“I think I’m going to demolish that church, want to help?” She asked me with pleading eyes.

“Really? What made you change your mind about it?” I asked her, raising an eyebrow.

“I almost got sick in there, and another bell fell through the ceiling again, I think it’s safe to say the thing is too dangerous for even me to practice alchemy,” She paused for a second. “But maybe we can destroy everything except for the main entrance; it seems stable enough, just not the ceiling.”

I wasn’t too sure if Maya was lying or not but I couldn’t say no to that offer. I’ve wanted to blow the place down for a couple months now. Over dinner, we made our plans to demolish the church. Well, everything except the main entrance so she still had walls to practice her alchemy circles, oddly enough. I live in one pretty strange family.
