Carpe Diem Ad Muertum
Sieze the day, to the death. There is no potential that shall be passed by, there is no piece of glory to fall by the wayside, there is no soul to left unsaved by the brilliance of language. As writers, we are gods.
Dr. House
House is an amazing television show. Theology, sardonicism, philosophy, word play, social manipulation... it's wonderful! And tonight, there was an incredible conversation between House (a dedicated atheist) and a patient who had been raped, impregnated, and infested with siphilus (sp?) chlamydia. She was a dedicated monotheist determined to ferret some past traumatic experience out of House. Their conversation was awesome.
House: You have a choice between two things- either there is no god, or God is unimaginably cruel. You think God was testing you so that you can have eternal life. Well, then this life is nothing- just a little blip in eternity. Like a cockroach to the universe.
Patient: If there is no afterlife, then whatever you do here is meaningless! Your actions are worth nothing- there's no point in living!
House: You live to make this life as best as you can.
Patient: But there is no ultimate consequence!
*stunned silence*
House: So you want the man who raped you to be punished?

And they go on (those aren't exact quotes; I wish I had the script for the episode so they could be). I just thought was cool, and derived my own little play. Theist = T, Atheist = A. I realize that this is not necessarily typical atheist belief, but it is a common doctrine.

T: So you don't believe in God.
A: Right.
T: So you don't believe in any god.
A: Right.
T: Do you believe in the transcension of the soul?
A: No.
T: Do you believe in descension of the soul?
A: No.
T: Do you believe in the soul at all?
A: No. We are animals bred by science to be what we can be.
T: So you don't believe in an afterlife.
A: Right.
T: If there is no ultimate consequence, why does it matter what any of your actions mean? What's keeping you from killing me right now? Ethics? Ethics don't matter. We'll all be cast into oblivion which, if we assume that the abilities to think, observe, and feel are preferable to the opposite, is a worse damnation than hell simply because of the ubiquitous fear of that state present throughout life. Therefore, it must be assumed that we are all evil, to be thus damned, and I am as evil as you, and killing you would be an abhorrent evil which would not actually impact you at all. Why are we not in a state of constant war, every human against every other human? You can either choose to accept that there is a God or barring that a soul, or you can choose to accept that the little bit of happiness you perceptually "earn" each day is meaningless and that your life is not worth a bubonic rat's.
A: *insert working atheist argument, if there is one*

See, this is biased because I'm a theist and I see no reason for choosing atheism; however, it's one of my best arguments yet.
