The shopkeeper took Racheal into her arms and stroked her hair, clucking softly.
“Now my dear, you aren’t like the others. The ones who tried to do to all of us harm. You were barely born when all of that happened.” Racheal hiccupped and looked at the shopkeepers face.
“So they have no reason to hurt me?”
“Oh darling?! Did they hurt you?!” Racheal shook her head.
“I just hurt inside when people call me those mean names. It hurts me in my chest.”
“That is your heart dear one. The people who do those things are hateful to your people in the past and perhaps think that you will follow in their footsteps, but I know you would never do that.” Racheal snuggle closer into the woman’s embrace. The woman’s husband came in and saw Racheal. He smiled and watched for a moment before cutting in.
“Now Caroline, don’t choke the poor girl.” He was giggled at by both females in the room. Racheal and Caroline gave each other another squeeze and Racheal went to Caroline’s husband and gave him a hug. He held her like he would his own daughter if they had one.
Racheal waved to the shopkeepers as she walked home, with the sun leading the way. He adopted father was a retired military man. Her real father was part of the military but she cared nothing for him. But that man was now dead and so was her mother. Racheal had heard of an alchemic process that could bring those who had gone back to those who loved them, but Racheal also had heard of the consequence. She would never try it and she knew her mother would be upset with her if she did.
As she neared the front gates, she could make out the form of her father and another man. As she came closer, it happened to be the man who had slighted her that afternoon. The man saw Racheal, looked at her father and his eyes grew wide in recognition and fear. Racheal’s father looked from the man to Racheal and back, puzzled. Racheal, coolly determined walked to her father’s side.
