I wish they were a little more clear as to what happened to past-Gamora at the end. The last we see of her is meeting Peter Quill for the first time and asking her sister “really, this guy” and Nebula was like it was “either him or the tree”. I don’t remember for sure, but I think this was during the battle or towards the end of it.
At Tony’s funeral we see Nebula was there, but Gamora was absent from it. Some people took that to mean she might’ve been dusted too. Because she was technically part of Thanos’ army when she came to the present timeline.
Though, my friend reminded me that Peter said that his (and the rest of the Guardians’) mission is to now go look for Gamora. I was taking that to mean they wanted to find their Gamora (and not about past-Gamora). I figured Peter wanted to see for himself if she was really dead or to maybe buried her. Since they never got a chance to do that or to even properly mourn her before they were snapped away.
It was pointed out to me, that it does sound like they were actually talking about past-Gamora. Apparently she decided to stay in the current timeline. I wonder why she didn’t stick around with Nebula? Or why not go back to her original timeline? Maybe she was curious and wanted to see what became of her future self? Hmm, I guess that would mean the next movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be about them looking for past-Gamora.
I guess to them it doesn’t matter that she’s not the same Gamora. Only this time Thor is along for the ride. I’ve heard that this film will serve as an “epic conclusion” to the their story. So it will be an end to the current “iteration” of the team, but they will leave it open for another set of guardians to appear in the MCU.
Now that I think about it, if past-Gamora decides to stay permanently in this current timeline, it will create an alternative past timeline that won’t have the Guardians in it. Or maybe it will, but she just won’t be in it? Or they die at different points because they never meet each other? So interesting…I wouldn’t be surprise if Endgame spawns a lot of fanfiction (because there’s so many ideas for alternative timelines now).
As for the whole, which teams got to go after which stones. I realized that Nebula did helped with the planning too. Because of her, they figured out that the soul stone was on Vormir. So it’s possible that she was the one to suggest for Natasha and Clint to go there. Or maybe Natasha was the one to tell Clint to team up with her to go get it.
Nebula may not have known the logistics, but she certainly knew enough to warn them before they headed off to Vormir. I think her warning was that…”He [Thanos] went to Vormir with her [Gamora], he came back with the Soul stone… and she didn’t.”
I think Natasha had some idea, but it was only on the planet that it was confirmed for her. As they knew someone might have to die for the Soul stone (but they didn’t know it had to be a sacrifice of someone you cared for).
