The series has never been explicit about Dante’s age, but there have been a bunch of hints dropped over the years that we can used to come into a reasonable conclusion.
According to the Devil May Cry 3 Manga Eva was killed 10 years before the manga begins. After all, it shows that on Dante and Vergil’s eighth birthday Mundus’ loyal soldiers found them and attack. The manga is also set a year before the start of DMC3, so that would make Dante 19 years old in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. That makes sense because he does act and look like a teenager, who’s ready to face whatever the world throws at him.
The Devil May Cry Vol. 1 Novel wasn’t included because that source is consider to be semi-canon since much of the events is retconned because of the DMC3 game and manga. Only parts of the novels might still remain within the canon story. Dante’s alias as “Tony Redgrave” is also mentioned in the Devil May Cry: The Animated Series and engraved on all appearances of Luce and Ombra as well as on Ebony and Ivory. Also, the novel provides the only explanation as to where engraving “.45 Art Warks” comes from. Nico from Devil May Cry 5 is stated to be the Granddaughter of Nell Goldstein too.
Anyway…
Devil May Cry 3 Manga = 18 years old Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening = 19 years old Devil May Cry = 28 years old (Trish confirms Eva died 20 years ago. We know Dante was 8 when Eva died) Devil May Cry: The Animated Series = 29 years old Devil May Cry 4 = 30 - 38 years old (some suggest 36 years old) Devil May Cry Vol. 2 Novel = 48 years old (these events happened several months before DMC2 in which Dante has found himself in an alternate universe where the human world is ruled by demons) Devil May Cry 2 = 48 years old Devil May Cry 5 = UNKNOWN (but I’m guessing around 52 years old)
Originally everyone believed that Devil May Cry 5 was a direct follow-up to Devil May Cry 4 and before Devil May Cry 2. But according to a French outlet, one of the Capcom PRs at Gamescom has confirmed that DMC5 does indeed take place after DMC2. It was also reconfirmed by producer Matt Walker that Devil May Cry 5 does takes place a few years after the events of Devil May Cry 2.
DMC5 will be referencing and continuing off of DMC2. It will probably retcon some of the events that happened in the previous game so that there’ll be more consistency in the series and explain a few things (like why Dante’s personality in that game was lacking). After all, in the beginning of Devil May Cry 5 it’s stated that Dante has been missing for a while and no one knows where he has been. So that could very well implied that he has been in Hell and could also explain why he’s all scruffy with a beard, longer hair, older and his clothing looking worn out.
And that the ruined city with a lot of destroyed skyscrapers could be the very same city at the end of DMC2 – Uroboros City that Dante is driving away from (however, that’s on an island so it’s most likely some other city or maybe a flashback). It’s not the same motorcycle though, so he must have upgraded to a demonic one since I doubt he’ll be able to get gas for a human made machine in Hell.
Right now, it’s a bit difficult to get an accurate age for DMC5 Dante until we know how much time has past between DMC2 and DMC5. What we do know is that Red Grave City is the main location in Devil May Cry 5 wherein a demonic tree sprouts and an invasion occurs (there’s also many incidents happening around the world). And it sounds like Dante has returned from Hell and is settling back in his shop and needs cash to pay his bills after being gone for so long. As it’s hinted by him saying that “The water needs turning on and these toilets need flushing”.
Note: According to Hideki Kamiya when asked about Dante’s ageing process; he said that he ages like a human, but stops aging in Devil Trigger. If Dante assumed his demonic form he would be immortal, but he chooses to live as a human so he ages at the same rate as a regular human.
And, no, just because Dante has a healing factor like Wolverine’s that doesn’t mean his aging slows down too. It only kicks in when he’s injured and aging isn’t seen as an ‘injury’ since it’s a natural part of a human’s body.
