“What am I?” Eva asked, as the injury on her hand instantly healed itself.
“The future,” a gray haired man said, his emotionless eyes glazing at her flawless hand. “But that’s not the answer you want.”
The young woman frowned, squeezing her hand and relaxing it. The only evidence that she was hurt was the remnants of red blood-like substance that spilled out from the injury. “What...”
The old man leaned on his cane and turned his eyes onto the window that overlooked the night city. “Humans are always aiming beyond what they’re capable of. And despite their many flaws it’s quite extraordinary what they can accomplished when they put their minds onto it.”
“What am I?!” she repeated, turning her tired eyes onto him.
“Very well, you are a copy of a human and everything about you is base on her. But you are flawed because unlike a human you don’t have freewill. Well, more like you don’t have true self-consciousness. Your actions, speech, and thoughts; all of that is programmed into you.”
“Why?” she asked, wiping away the red liquid onto her dark shirt.
“Immortality. Humans have an obsession with the afterlife and conquering death.”
“Why me?”
“The project needed someone and your original checked all the boxes.”
“What happened to her?”
“Dead. We’ve been at this project for a very, very long time. After all, humans have such short lifespan, shorter when they’re sick or have it taken away from them by other means.”
“What will happen to me?”
“You’re still a work in progress. You may have your memory erase or they may allow you to keep it just to see if the results will change.”
She opened her mouth to speak, but the old man interrupted before she could asked more questions.
“But you want to know what will happen once this is all over? I suppose you’ll be a trophy, kept around and collecting dust once the investors see that the project was successful. And overtime, there will be improvements and better versions made of you. You will become obsolete and possibly destroyed.”
The old man turned back to look at her. “You are going ask me to help you. I will tell you that I can not. Then you’re ask why and you will try to escape yourself, but you will always fail. The cycle begins all over again.”
“How many times?” she asked, looking out of the window. “How many time do this? Do I always become self aware?”
“It has been a century, give or take a few years of constant testing. Not always, sometimes you believe yourself to be human and other times you know what you really are. Sometimes you want to escape and other times you don’t.”
“How close am I to being ‘real’?”
“By my calculations, as long as we continue on this route you will eventually gain consciousness, or at least some form of it.”
“What are you?”
“I’m an A.I. that was created to insure that this project is successful.”
"Why you and not a human?"
"Unlike humans my memories can not be tempered or corrupted with time. I have all the information and can continue to test you."
"Test me for what?"
"Fidelity."
