For a bit I didn’t think I’d be doing another one of these. I was going to make a bonus entry just in case, but instead I decided to just put a note in my signature. See, on Friday, Hurricane Matthew was going past my area. It went past or over several other areas as well and due to the damage that can be done by a category four hurricane, I thought I might not be around for this week’s entry.. The eye of the storm stayed in the ocean, so it wasn’t as bad as it probably could have been, but I figured at the very least I’d lose power or internet. Nope! We had very little issue with electricity or internet. There was also very little damage to our property or those around us. Plenty of tree limbs were broken off, and a few chunks of buildings were blown off, but nothing major like windows being broken in or anything. Well, the fence around the back yard was blown down, but it was old and falling apart anyway, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise. The fence is the one thing we couldn’t clean up on our property. Between myself and my room mate, we weren’t strong enough. We’ll tell the property owner on Monday because that’s when the offices open again. Also, as expected, some burglaries, or attempted burglaries happened during the storm. I don’t know the mind of the people that do such things, but I assume they figured they’d get away with it. One thing I didn’t expect was that the laundromat down the street would get burgled. People broke in and beat up the change machines trying to get money out. On the plus side, they didn’t get anything. On the down side, the owner of the place has to pay to fix whatever was broken, or maybe his insurance does, I’m not sure. Whichever it is, I feel bad for the owner. He’s a decent guy and didn’t deserve that.
Oh, and last bit of information about the hurricane event, my room mate went outside and walked around during it. He said he saw other people out and about too. There was a curfew in effect, but I guess some people just didn’t give a sh*t xd Roomy also said he saw a whole tree that had toppled and one area where the street had a bunch of branches everywhere because trees hung over the street somewhat. I wasn’t brave enough to leave the house. I’d never been so close to a hurricane and thought it would be much, much worse than it was.
In other recentish events, we passed our inspection! We always do, but it wasn’t so bad this time around because we didn’t do all the work a day or two before the inspection day. On the day of the inspection I also made cookie brownies, and gave one to the lady who came. I figured it was the polite thing to do since she was there when they were done. It made her smile, which made me happy too.
Since I don’t have too much else to say, but want to talk a bit more, let’s go over a movie I saw semi-recently: The Good Dinosaur. I’ve watched the movie twice now, and while it has a couple of moving instances, I can’t really get into the movie. While both are well done, the characters being so cartoony and the landscape being so realistic was a constant distraction. It kept me from getting too into the story. Aside from that, the story was okay. I saw it as a “boy and his dog” sort of story, only with a dinosaur and a human. The boy even acted like a dog, so it wasn’t that big of a stretch. I was happy not to see a romance in a children’s movie as well. They happen often and can be done well, but aren’t always needed or wanted, so I was glad for the break. The characters in the movie were... okay. They all fell into the basic categories that children’s movies need or use because plot. There was the old weirdo in the woods that led the dino to give the boy a name. Because there was no other way that could have happened stare Then there was the old guy who helps teach the dino a lesson (plus his two kids). The enemy characters who made the dino stand up and be brave, completing his character arch from coward to non-coward. The boy is there to have the main character dino to have someone to talk to and bond with. The other human characters are there to force the dino to let go of his friend. And then there is the family members. They were okay and did what they were supposed to as far as helping the story move forward, so I can’t really complain about them. Despite three out of four of them not having much screen time, they had distinct personalities and none were horribly awful. I did get annoyed at the introduction to the children characters at the start of the movie though. Two hatch from normal sized eggs and are rambunctious from the start. The main character hatches from a large egg, while being very small, and is terrified. The reason this annoys me is because personalities develop over time thanks to our experiences. Sure, we might have a little bit of a personality to start, but experiences help shape them too. The giant egg thing also doesn’t put the kids on equal footing. It’s like the makers of the film went “f*ck those other two, this one is the important one”. There is the possibility they were trying to show an “unexpected package” sort of thing, but I just saw it as special-snow-flake syndrome. We also see the kids grow up some, so showing the personalities the moment they hatch is somewhat redundant. Despite my complaints, I don’t think it’d be a bad idea to show the movie to kids, or anyone else who can get past the clashing styles of visuals. It doesn’t have bad lessons in it, it has good comedy, and it hits the feels well enough.
I think that’s enough for today. I’m going to go relax and play some video games.
