Anonymous asked: Are reader inserts still banned on ffnet? I've seen quite a lot of them on the site, most recently from 2015.
Yes, it’s still banned since 2005. In the FF.Net forum of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Cornucopia they explain the reasons behind the ban on Choose Your Own Adventure Fic/Self-Insertion Fic/2nd Person Point of View Fic.
The gist of it is that Reader-insert are banned because it can be considered a form of child porn. When the writer includes a lemon (sex scene) in their story about a character exploring ‘your body’ and the reader happens to be a minor, the writer becomes guilty of child porn “and if an angry parent found out they could not only sue the site itself, but also prosecute the writer and have them labeled as a sex offender for the rest of their life”.
The second reason is, especially for CYOA, is when it’s becomes interactive with the reviewers. It’s perfectly fine for readers to go choose their path in the story, but when it involves “people send(ing) in reviews asking the author to write what they want, rather than going off of the actual authors own ‘imagination’” than it’s not okay. The review section isn’t meant for that hence the reason they banned it.
If you’re still seeing Reader-insert stories around that’s probably because they don’t include smut in them or are interactive with their reviewers. FF.Net goal in their purges (and those that report stories on the site’s behalf) is to remove copyright (songfics), sexual and interactive content. So if those kind of stories don’t have either of those content within them it’s because they aren’t worth reporting, since they don’t really violate the real reasons of the ban. At least, that’s what I can figured out why they haven’t been remove or reported by now.
Note: The forum has been deleted but with the Internet Archive: Wayback Machine you can still view it there.
