Start with :
Sometimes I feel just like a gerbil, running around and around on his wheel!
You would think that by now I would be use to this but I guess I never will. That should be a good thing, right? I mean, it shows that I'm still human. Even after spending years working in this kind of business, a lot of people tend to give in and become the monsters they hunt. It's never easy and sometimes people don't know what they're getting themselves into, until it's too late for them to back out. That's what happened to Stella. She had the skills, the smarts and the tools but the job broke her.
It was always one horrible hunt after another, and each time it took pieces of her soul away. She was strong, most people would have given up by now but she made it farther than anyone else would've in her shoes. But one day, something changed and she was put through hell, some believe literally. No one could have ever survive what was done to her. Somehow, she did the impossible and came back from the darkness still intact.
When you’re in this line of work it will always leave a mark on you. The only thing you can think about is getting the job done and what job to do next. That’s all what your life will ever be about until it kills you. You can’t have a normal life. You just can’t. People have tried, but it will always find a way to drag them back, kicking and screaming if it must.
You can’t run from it because nothing ever stays in the past, especially if you have loose ends. Or whatever it is has unfinished business with you. I’m not surprise that it all leads back to Stella.
You see, Stella was Turned. It wasn’t by choice either, it never is. It also wasn’t how it usually went. Whatever the reason, once a person turns they are gone. In their place is a creature that wears their skin as a disguise, feeding off pain and the blood of innocent souls. Sometimes they can be saved, but it depends on what they change into. I remember that day as though it was yesterday.
I was at it for a much longer period than Stella. She was a recent member to the organization, but that didn’t mean she was a stranger to the supernatural. She worked on her own, dealing with the ones that were overlooked by Elision, the organization I worked for. To everyone else, it was just an security firm that test the effectiveness of other business’ own security and provide solutions. Under the same name, they even offer bodyguard services to protect individuals or groups and private investigation. They have other branches, but I don’t keep track of them all. Whatever we needed, each front made it easier for us to do our jobs without arousing suspicion.
Anyway, Stella was assigned as my partner. Usually they pair new recruits with a more experienced member but she was already ahead of the game. She didn’t require any hand-holding like most fresh faces, but she still had a lot to learn. If only they didn’t break protocol, maybe this whole thing could’ve been avoided. But someone out there with a lot of power gave the order to move her up the ladder and put her with me. She wasn’t ready for my kind of work, most importantly she wasn’t ready for the real truth. She knew that monsters were real, but not what they really were.
The boogieman, vampires, demons...they all exist, but they are not what you think of them. They all started off like us, normal everyday people but at some point they change. It isn’t a virus, but a disease or a mutation -- I’m not sure which it is, but it just happens randomly, sometimes it’s passed on. It isn’t a curse, but it’s something that naturally happens. We called them the Turned.
Rarely do Turned hunters happen. It’s not like they can control what happens to them, nor can we predict those who will change. But we do try to help them, that’s if they can be saved. There is no cure, but some affections are livable and can be manage with proper care and supervision. Otherwise, they need to be taken care of before they lose their humanity.
My job was to help the Turned that could be helped. Stella never knew her family history and none of her tests ever came back negative, unless that’s a lie and someone covered that up. One day she Turned, no warning or anything. It was unexpected, but not surprising. What made her case interesting was that she was cured somehow and that has never happen ever before. We didn’t think it was possible.
But it’s not like the scientist tried and gave up after a few times. Even till this day they work at it, hoping to find a breakthrough. It’s just difficult to find a cure or treatment, when we don’t truly understand it. It is a supernatural illness, after all. So using logic and normal methods don’t work on it.
