I’m still not sure if I like the show or not, but it does have potential to be great. I do like the fact that this takes place in the very beginning of the zombie apocalypse and that it follows normal people (and by that, I mean civilians who don’t have any training or experience with weapons). It gets tiring to come across film, tv shows and stories that have characters that conveniently own weapons and/or know how to use them.
Realistically, a good chuck of the population is civilians. So not every single one of them will own a weapon at home or knows how to use one. They also wouldn’t be quick to kill someone so easily, especially if it’s someone they know personally. It would be a difficult concept to grasp and it’s something that they would realistically struggle with.
I like the fact that some of the characters in the show reflect that. Some struggle with what’s going on, some are in denial or haven’t fully realize their situation. There are some people that are suspicious and are catching on. While a few are smart and have a pretty good idea of what’s going on, especially their situation.
Remember, in this fictional world of Fear The Walking Dead (and The Walking Dead) zombies don’t exist. They don’t have zombie films, books, video games or tv shows that we do in reality. So they have no knowledge or concept of it. They don’t even have a term for it – which is another reason why they don’t call them zombies and instead use walkers. It’s why the society collapse so quickly. They were caught off guard completely, because they don’t know what those “people” are. They don’t know how to kill them, what to do or how it works. Hence, the reason that they remove anyone that was sick, expose to someone that was sick or is a health risk to their safe haven.
They’re still in the progress of figuring everything out. Some people complained about how slow pace it is, and how dumb the characters are but what do you expect? It’s the beginning and the characters are still “innocent”. It’s building up, because eventually s**t is gonna hit the fan and they’re gonna be put through the ringer. The military is also keeping them in the dark, because if people realize the truth they will lose control.
It’s also why I don’t have an opinion on the characters. It’s too soon for me to dislike or like them just yet. We got a bit of a taste of what they’re like before the apocalypse, but they’re going to change. You can’t face an apocalypse without going through some sort of a personal growth. They’re going to make mistakes (which they will learn from – or at least they better), have their own problems to deal with and become stronger or weaker depending on what will happen to them. After all, everyone handles stress and their situations differently.
It’s kinda annoying hearing people automatically hate on characters because of their personality/attitude or whenever they do something wrong. We know what to expect and how to survive, the characters don’t. They’re behaving realistically and according to their characterization. They just need time to adjust, to learn and grow into badass survivors that we all know that they’ll eventually become.
I won’t be surprise if those that originally hated a character ends up loving them, because the characters will change as the show progress. After all, everyone dislike Carol Peletier (from The Walking Dead) because they thought she was useless and whiny in the beginning. But look at her now, she’s a badass. The same can be said for Carl Grimes. He was just a kid, prone to doing some stupid s**t, but throughout the show he continues to mature. The same can apply to the characters that people love right now, they might end up hating them as the show continues.
