Zombie Apocalypse - How Useful Would A Chef Be? |

How useful would a classically trained chef be in a zombie apocalypse? The character I'm RPing is not only classically trained, she's also picked up some really useful skills from working in her grandparents general store when she was younger. For example, she knows how to preserve fruits and vegetables along with making yeast from scratch. -- asked by slxmchances
A chef could be pretty useful. They could make a meal out of rodents, bugs and nuts. They can make them tasty, using whatever seasoning they have. Maybe they’ll be able to recognize plants that are edible and use them too. Like you mention, they’ll be able to make food last a little longer by preserving them. They’ll ration food correctly and be able to make a balance meal so that their body doesn’t suffer too much.
But keep in mind that most chefs aren’t trained in survival. So not all chefs will know what plants and berries are safe to eat. Or know how to hunt for food. Or know how to make certain things from scratch. Or know all the ways to start a fire in order to cook (or bake) the food. Unless the chef specialize in it, it’s a hobby or they were taught (like they lived on a farm or in remote area in which they’re use to hunting and living off the land).
I actually have a couple of sources that mention how useful chefs would be in a zombie apocalypse. Some explain what they can do, what they need to know and do to survive in an apocalypse.
Prepping and Cooking in the Zombie Apocalypse — Brion Shreffler “sat down with 4 Philly chefs and posed the following hypothetical: faced with being holed up in your restaurant for months or even beyond a year, how would you prep all the food you had on hand with a presumed 2-3 days before your utilities went and you said goodbye to refrigeration and gas powered anything.”
Interview: Lauren Wilson, Zombie Apocalypse Expert and Culinary Chef — Lauren Wilson wrote a cookbook for the zombie apocalypse, which has insight on how to scavenge, what to pack, and how to make do with minimal supplies. Of course, it also has recipes of what you can make with what’s available to you. The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse: A Cookbook and Culinary Survival Guide by Lauren Wilson
Bon Appetit - How to Eat and Eat Well After the Zombie Apocalypse — “Shane Hobel is an elite tracker and the founder of the Mountain Scout Survival School, which offers classes on wilderness and urban survival in upstate New York and Central Park. He’s been known to spend several weeks in the wilderness with little more than his wits to get him through. More important, he likes to live comfortably, and wouldn’t go long without a decent meal just because the world was ending. Bon Appétit was lucky enough to spend some time with Hobel to learn not only how to survive Doomsday but to thrive afterward.”
The Chef, with Don’t Get Bit — Just another day in the life of a chef, living in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse.
CultureMap Houston - What will you eat when the zombies come? — Houston chefs reveal their plans to dine well amid the living dead.
Recipes for the Post-Apocalypse: How and Why to Eat Rat Meat — Laura Ginn, a Photographer broke her lengthy vegetarianism to eat rat meat. She wanted to learn how to skin, butcher, and prepare rats, and she did so with the help of chef Yuri Hart. Ginn shared with us what she learned from the experience, the pros and cons of consuming rat meat, and a recipe for rat jerky.
