My inbox is becoming flooded with questions about a fandoms’ time period and if I have a research post that can help write about it. This post will try to cover all the questions I was asked or might be asked in the future. If there’s any that I missed let me know and I’ll add it on.
Captain America: The First Avenger
Takes place around 1942, during World War II.
Team Fortress 2
The main setting for the in-game events, like the Gravel War takes place during the summer of 1968. Just keep in mind that it is in a alternative timeline of the 1960s.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
It is initially set in London during The Blitz, which is in 1940. You’ll find some information about life in London during WWII, especially the evacuees here.
The Mummy (1999)
The film takes place in 1923 and has scenes that take place in Ancient Egypt as well. But remember, this movie contains a lot of historical inaccuracy, just letting you know in case you’ve notice how much the information in the movie differs from actual history.
Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji)
Is set in Victorian London.
X-Men: First Class
The second prequel in the X-Men series is set in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Part of the film takes place in 1973, the Seventies.
BioShock
Is set in 1960 in the underwater city of Rapture, somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.
BioBhock Infinite
Is set in 1912 in Columbia, a fictional city suspended in the air through a combination of giant blimps, balloons, reactors, propellers, and mainly “quantum levitation.” Check here for 1900s information and here for 1914 to 1918, which is when WWII took place.
American Horror Story: Asylum
Begins in 1964 at the fictional mental institution, Briarcliff Manor, following the stories of the staff and inmates who occupy it.
American Horror Story: Freak Show
Is set in 1952 Jupiter, Florida, telling the story of one of the last remaining freak shows in America, and their struggle for survival.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
The story is set in the early 18th century Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy.
King Kong (2005)
In the spring of 1933, at the height of the Great Depression in New York City.
300 & 300: Rise Of An Empire
In 480 BC (Ancient Greece), the year of the pre-Julian Roman calender.
Mad Men
Is set in the 1960s, initially at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York City.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The year is 1898, in the late Victorian Era (1837–1901), though in the film adaptation it was 1899.
Sherlock Holmes
There are many Sherlock Holmes adaptations. The ones I’ve seen are those that are set in Victorian London, for example: Sherlock Holmes (2009), which has Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law set in 1891, London.
Vikings
The series is set at the beginning of the Viking Age, marked by the Lindisfarne raid in 793.
Alice: Madness Returns
It takes place in 1875 in Victorian London.
Downton Abbey
The series is set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey, which depicts the lives of an aristocratic family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era.
Pirates of the Caribbean
The film is set somewhere around the Golden Age of Piracy, around the 1740s, although a number of concessions are made concerning historical accuracy.
How to Train Your Dragon
The story takes place in a mythical Viking world on the island of Berk.
One Piece
This won’t help you with the world of One Piece, but it will help if you want to know about real Pirates.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Depending on what TMNT universe you’re writing about, it’s mostly set in modern-day New York City. I don’t have any research post for that, but I do have one for Ninjas.
