I had never had roasted seaweed. These seasoned seaweed strips are crisp, maybe a little oily and salty. They certainly smell and taste fishy. Inside each pouch is a plastic tray that holds 6 or 8 sheets of pre-cut seaweed to prevent crush damage. When I tried one, it reminded me of what eating the skin of sardines taste like. I don’t find that to be a pleasant taste. I guess seaweed isn’t for everyone and it’s definitely an acquired taste.
After this, I don’t think I’ll ever touch anything seaweed. I’m definitely not a fan of it. I just wanted to try one to see if I would like it. My sister enjoyed it and the reason she got it in the first place is because it’s healthy. Seaweed’s best-known benefit is that it is an extraordinary source of a nutrient missing in almost every other food: iodine. Consuming healthy levels of iodine is critically important to maintaining a healthy thyroid, a gland in your neck which helps produce and regulate hormones.
Research suggests seaweed can also help regulate estrogen and estradiol levels — two hormones responsible for proper development and function of sexual organs; potentially reducing the risk of breast cancer. And many studies have shown seaweed is an extraordinarily potent source of antioxidant and also helps prevent inflammation, which can contribute to a host of ailments that include arthritis, celiac disease, asthma, depression and obesity.
