Personal Hygiene During The Apocalypse |

Many people don't realize how important personal hygiene is and will be for a zombie apocalypse. I know many will be focusing on getting water, food and shelter (and weapons) but don't forget there's a unseen enemy that we all need to fight against as well. It's not just zombies and hostile survivals that we have to watch out for but also illnesses. Keeping good hygiene prevents diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites from infecting us.
So don't forget to include personal hygiene items, such as soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, toothpaste and so on, in your bug out bags. We need to be at our physical best because in a apocalypse doctors and dentists are very hard to come by. If you're lucky and do find one, they won't be able to do much to help you without the proper equipment. So your best bet is to practice good hygiene in order to prevent becoming ill in the first place.
For example, when it comes to brushing your teeth, if you don't have toothpaste available, simply having your toothbrush with you and brushing your teeth with water, will be better than not brushing them at all. If you don't even have a toothbrush, you can also chew on the tip of a twig to make it spread out into several small strands then use it in the same way that a toothbrush is used. Salt is also a great way to brush your teeth, as well as a mouthwash to keep bad breath away.
When you don't brush your teeth, bacteria builds and it begins to release acids which eat away at your enamel. Eventually over time this could lead to gum disease.
So it helps to know some natural (or alternative) ways to also stay clean. For example, maybe you're suffering from severe dry skin or have gotten lice. Just rub on some olive oil to your skin and it'll be back to it's healthy state. It can also treat lice, just apply and leave on for 40 minutes, then wash the hair twice. Actually, there are many other ways that olive oil can be used for:
Shaving Control hair frizz Cuticles Free a stuck zipper Lip balm Stop snoring (a sip before bed could help by lubricating your throat muscles) Cure an earache (soaked cotton swab in the ear can help; also helps to clear out excess ear wax) Fix a squeaky door Helps clean-up tools (can help to cut down on built-up blood and dirt) Condition leather Cure diaper rash
Also look into coconut oil which has A LOT of uses, more so than olive oil. These things are always great to know because eventually manufactured products will run out or become expired. Let's say you've been to all the stores (or broke into homes) but they've already been raided for supplies. Well, maybe what has been left behind may seem useless to most survivors but could actually be beneficial for you?
They probably didn't think of how useful some of the items left behind could be. For example, cinnamon oil can be used for skin infection, helps relieve pain, helps to stop the bleeding, eliminates mosquitoes, helps to ease menstrual cramps, yeast infections, arthritis, colds, flu, and so on. Even other items can be useful, such as a crayon, which can be used as a candle and it will burn for 30 minutes.
But the important thing is to not forget about your personal hygiene. Keep yourself, your tools and clothing clean and well cared for. If you don't have soap, scrubbing them in really hot or cold water will be effective enough.
