Surprising enough, there are people who ask for advice on how to write a female character. The character’s gender really doesn’t make a different in who they are. It’s an aspect that has very little impact on their characterization. You shouldn’t view the character as male or female, instead focus on who they are. Why do they do the things they do? Why do they like or hate the things they do? Build up their back-story, build up their personality, their interests and so on. Let their gender be the last thing on your mind.
Even though they are fictional characters; in their fictional world, they are alive. They bleed, they feel emotions and think just like we do. The goal in creating a well developed character is to make them realistic, which makes them relatable. Too many people believe that writing the opposite gender is impossible and it’s actually pretty simple.
Write the characters as human beings. The fact that a character is female or male doesn’t matter. Their individuality and humanity is what makes them who they are, not their gender.
