Writing Romance To Me Is... |

It is an interesting subject. Romance is unexpected, exciting and stories should reflect that. Readers want to be surprise and knowing right off the bat who the pairings are destroys that. It’s a whole lot of fun when readers see the build up in how the character’s relationship form.
Sure, some stories list the pairings in the summary but that doesn’t mean the writers should already be throwing in the obvious hints between the characters. The readers aren’t surprise when the characters come together because they already expect it. But just because the readers already know the pairing, that doesn’t mean you can’t throw a curve ball at them.
Keep them on their toes! Make it seem like the characters aren’t truly interested in each other. Maybe one of them will end up with someone else? How? Well try to hint at another possible pairing. Or show that maybe the characters won’t end up together because the lack of interest that they have in each other? Maybe throw in subtle hints about the pairing instead of just making it obvious? Or maybe have them wrongly interpret a character’s hints for interest in them? Doing that will make the readers look closely into the characters’ actions and words for a deeper meaning. Just surprise your readers, pull them into the story by keeping things a mystery for them.
When you think about it, realistically, falling in love is a complicated process. Two characters aren’t going to fall in love and want to marry each other for the rest of their life without knowing each other first. They need to know each other, to know if they are compatible, you need to know the characters well enough to understand what attracts and what repels them as well. Then it depends on the characters in how they would deal with love and their love interest.
Do they have experience in falling in love?
In being in a relationship?
Does their previous experience interfere with their future relationship?
Are they reluctant to let themselves fall in love with someone?
Is it because they are scared to get heartbroken?
Or they are scared that something will happen to their love interest if they love them back?
Is it because the situation prevents them from being together?
Do they know the differences of love? Of when they are infatuated, when they have an attachment/fondness, when they’re sexually attractive to someone, or in puppy love, or truly in love?
If they know the difference of what they’re feeling then how? Is it because they had past experience with those feelings?
How would they react if the other character admits their feelings for them? Would they pursue them?
Or would they let it be and hope that in time they’ll be able to move on? Why?
There are so many questions that you can ask about your characters when it comes to their romance. So be sure to do that because it will help you to know your characters better. You need to know them well enough to understand how they’ll deal with love, how they’ll react and it will basically help you to keep them in character.
Just keep in mind that love does not necessarily conquer all. Sometimes when people love each other that doesn’t mean that they will, can, or want to have a relationship (or take it to the next step). Some people are just happy to be around their love one without putting an title on their relationship.
Also, love does not equal sex, nor does sex equal love. Those in love do not automatically mean that they will, can or want to have sex with each other. Love is about being satisfied with just being in the presence of the person you love. It is also about mutual respect, wanting what’s best for the other, even if it isn’t what’s best for you. It is because of love that it gives a person strength to let go of a relationship when it isn’t meeting their’s or the other needs.
For example, a person is willing to break up with their love one because they know they are holding them back from following their dreams. It’s not something they want to do but they love the other so much that they are willing to sacrifice their happiness with them to make sure that they succeed in their dream.
Another example, is if a person says they want to take it to the next step but the other isn’t ready. Those in love would and should always respect the other and wait. Too many people give into sex too soon simply because they were told by the other that they were loved, and then ended up being dumped after sex. Someone saying it doesn’t make it real. Talk is cheap and easy to do especially in the moment when passion and hormones are racing.
Love is NOT about giving up what’s best for you in order to keep your love one happy, especially when it comes to the topic of sex. That never works out for the anyone in the long run. In fact, it usually leads to low self-worth and diminishes self-respect. Real love is not caring about sex because it’s not an important aspect in relationships. It’s a bonus and not a reason to base on someone’s love on.
