I don’t know where this comparison came from but apparently someone believes that DmC: Devil May Cry is not as bad as Dante’s Inferno when it comes to…a character shooting a pregnant female in the stomach? That the people who hate or dislike DmC are being very petty for picking on that fact. That it also doesn’t matter if it’s out of character for the character to be doing that to the female because DmC is a reboot. That the characters and everything in DmC is suppose to be different from the original.
I don’t know why I was asked for my opinion on the subject but I’ll do my best to answer why certain people (or haters as some like to call them) aren’t happy about the game, especially that aspect of it.
DmC is a confusing mess. They set out to create a game that would appeal to a younger demographic. They believe that the original Dante was design from a Japanese perspective and that it wasn’t “cool” anymore or realistic. They decided to make Dante from a Western perspective and so they made it a reboot. A reboot’s purpose is to restart a franchise, a reset. They take a franchise back to its origins and start over again with a different take. Sometimes they discard much or all previous continuity but they always keeps the basics. Good examples of rebooted franchise are The Amazing Spider-man, Star Trek (2009), Batman Begins, The Incredible Hulk, etc.
Each of those franchise do their best to stick close to the original material while putting a new spin or direction on them. DmC doesn’t do that. The characters, the world they are in…everything about it is completely different from the original. Yes, they said it takes places in an alternative universe but what is the point of doing that, changing everything? It’s not Devil May Cry anymore. If they change the title and the name of the characters no one would’ve notice that it was originally connected to Devil May Cry (just as no one realize that Devil May Cry was originally suppose to be a Resident Evil game).
But they didn’t do that. So of course people will criticize DmC for having Devil May Cry in its title.
People aren’t happy that DmC discards the basics of the original. So they will criticize it for why DmC doesn’t contain the theme of Devil May Cry when it still carries the name of the original series. They want to know how in the world would Dante even care about humanity if he’s not even human anymore? Why would he care any way? There’s nothing really driving him to be a hero. And his brother, what is his motive? What made him be like that (going so low to shoot a pregnant woman…with a firearm no less)?
The original Vergil wasn’t a stereotypical evil villain. His reason was a noble one even if he was going about it the wrong way. He just wanted power. He believe that being powerful was the only way to protect anything (to protect people he love). I think such a reason and perspective was born from the lost of his mother. Being helpless to protect her, his brother and himself from the demons that attacked. And he probably felt that he had to also prove himself (that he wasn’t a weakling) because he’s the son of Sparda. It’s not exactly great to live in the shadow of someone else and not be known for your own person, for your own deeds. Plus, Vergil hated using guns because he considers them cowardly — unworthy of a “true warrior”.
Anyway, DmC’s Vergil his motives just…well they don’t make sense. And being evil is NOT a real reason for doing evil things. That’s like saying the crayon is purple because it’s purple. He apparently doesn’t have any issues in crossing the line and doing terrible things to achieve his goal. The original Vergil despises fighting dirty (even as Nelo Angelo he refused to attack his opponent’s back) and he is honorable even for a bad guy. That makes him memorable and not a one-dimensional character. DmC handles the characterization of Dante and Vergil poorly, even their backstory and plot. It’s no surprise that people have a hard time understanding where in the world the essence of Devil May Cry is at or where it will come from.
That is why people are questioning and are upset in the manner DmC’s Vergil dealt with the pregnant woman. As well as why Dante, the hero of the game felt the need to use what happen to the woman as a taunt.
Lastly, DmC: Devil May Cry and Dante’s Inferno is a bad comparison. Inferno takes place in Hell. It’s not surprising to see that the game reflects that. It’s suppose to be graphic and disturbing in nature. Even some critics, acknowledge that ”much of what you see is appropriate for a game that tries to explore the extreme nature of Hell and its punishments”. Just because DmC isn’t as bad as Dante’s Inferno doesn’t give it the excuse to have such a scene. Seeing or hearing about a character shooting a pregnant female in the stomach in DmC will upset people. They will want to know why did it have to happen. If it really had to be handle that way or if the game could have just left that out in the first place.
