I love these little violet flavored “mints” made by C Howard, Co. I first discovered these delicate little squares when I was a child. My sister introduce them to me and at the time I didn’t know what they were, mints or candy. I just knew that I like the favor, the way they look and the rich lavender-violet smell.
Recently, I came across them while groceries shopping and as usual I stopped at a pharmacy to pick up some wine (not for me, but for my dad because I dislike it and he always wants a bottle of wine to drink with his dinner). I was on the check out line waiting for my turn and that’s when my eyes notice the purple wrapper. It looked so familiar and that was when I realize it was the mints from my childhood.
These “mints” are not minty at all, but are instead sweet with subtle, perfume-y undertones. There’s also a gum version of it but I’ve never got a chance to try them. Maybe next time when I visit the pharmacy I will give them a try if they’re in stock.
Choward’s also produces a hard to find lemon flavored “mint” as well as a more traditional spearmint and peppermint — two flavors which I have never seen or tasted.
I would love to have this confection more in my life but the thing about them is that they’re difficult to find. I always thought that the manufacturer for the candy went out of business because they were never in any stores that I went to. But when I came across them I decided to do some research. Apparently, they can be found in some stores such as Party City stores, TOPS Supermarkets, WEGMANS Supermarkets, and some other smaller stores. Though a person’s best bet at getting them is from the manufacturer themselves, so check out their website.
