While I was thinking of what makes a character an antihero, I unintentionally ended up creating one. Though he’s still a work in progress in developing him more, so for now I’m writing all this down so I won’t forget.
So, I introduce you to Xue Feng, originally known as Xue Wu or Xuelian Feng by some. He’s an antihero. He won’t risk his life, save people or the world without getting something out of it. It could be for money, glory, for fun, etc.
However, he’s more likely to help the innocent then the criminals. He’s not that fond of helping them unless they have something he really wants. Otherwise, he stays out of their way and they stay out of his. Though there are times he just wants to purposely screw with them. For example: The bad guy takes a hostage and needs one in order to escape. Xue, asks the women if she wants him to save her. She says yes, and he tells her that he will save her but will only do so if he gets something in return. All she has on her is $15 and nothing much. He notices the pretty necklace and points it out to her. She says it’s worth a lot less then the money in her pocket, but if he wants it then he can have it. She offers him the money and the necklace. He surprises her, telling her that just the necklace will do.
His motto, is Quid pro quo (Latin for ‘this for that’, most often means a more-or-less equal exchange or substitution of goods or services.)
He does tend to commit some crimes but they are very minor. Stealing food, clothing, medical equipment, etc. They tend to be for selfish reason (such as he’s hungry and a hotdog stand was conveniently besides him), but he mostly does it to help those who need them more. He’s the way he is because he disagrees with the way heroes do things. He feels that they can’t reach their full potential or be real heroes if they stop confining themselves to the law.
He doesn’t kill, but he’s willing to make exceptions for some bad guys. The ones who commit horrific crimes, that are so sick in the head and just want to spread death/pain. His one rule that he will never break is killing innocent people. Even if he’s force into a situation where ‘killing the few to save the many’ would be ideal. He would do whatever he could to make sure they would all live, even if it means he had to die to do it.
If Xue found himself in this situation. Where it”s a huge war, that would decide the faith of the world and both sides, good and evil were willing to pay him to get him on their side. He would pick the one that would benefit him most.
The bad side goal is to make everyone in the world their mindless minions in order to have ultimate peace. They would offer him money and all he could ever want. The good side would also offer him money but that’s all. Their goal is to stop the bad guy and keep the world safe/the way it is — flaws and all.
Xue is an antihero and even though he leans more towards heroism, he could easily join the evil forces. But he wouldn’t because he would have to think realistically, that joining the bad side would mean he would pretty much cease to exist. He would not have a purpose anymore. As great it is to have a peaceful world he wouldn’t stand for someone taking away people’s freewill. He would side with the good and play if off as though he’s only doing it for the money but in reality it’s because he can’t stand the “mindless minions” part.
Now if the bad guy wanted to remove the evil thoughts/genes or whatnot in people, without any harm coming upon them in any way. Xue would most likely side with them. But if anything happens to innocent people he would drop siding with the bad guy like a bag of hot potatoes.
