I haven’t written much about DmC: Devil May Cry game, but with the recent trailer I felt the need to write my thoughts about it down. The first time I heard about it I was interested in it. A few months later images and leaked stuff about it came out. From what I’ve seen and heard, it didn’t sound like something I would be happy about.
But now that it’s more concrete I can have a solid opinion on it. I don’t like Dante’s new appearance but considering that I read the Devil May Cry novels it made sense. In the novels Dante was Anthony “Tony” Redgrave, he took on that identity because he was always hunted down because of his father. Hiding who he really was gave him some peace and he was able to live a semi-normal life. At some point he stopped hiding and running away. He finally accepted his name and his heritage.
That’s why I excuse his appearance because it’s only temporary. Though it does make me wonder why DmC Dante looks all bruised and cut up? The original Dante (despite being half human and half demon) had incredible healing abilities. Good examples of his healing ability is when he got stab with a sword, and shot in the head.
Anyway, there are some things that do concern me such as Dante’s personality, his parentage (half angel and half demon, really?), and smoking. If those aspects are too different and opposite of the original Dante, then what’s the point of a “reboot”? Why couldn’t they just create a new character, setting, time line, or whatnot that takes place in the same world as the Devil May Cry? They could have easily build up the story and history behind the Devil May Cry series.
They could have done that by making a prequel of how it all started, on how Dante’s father, Sparda became the Legendary Dark Knight. If they didn’t want to mess with that then they could have created a character that was there when it all happen. Maybe have that new character’s life cross paths and witness the day Sparda defeated Mundus or something. Doing that would have made people new to the series interested and want to check out the rest of the games. All the while get old fans of the game, wanting to know more about how their beloved game began.
If they didn’t want that, they could have created a new game that would have continue the Devil May Cry world, style and story by making it take place in the distant future. The main character may or may not contain Sparda’s bloodline but it shouldn’t matter. The point of such a game taking place in the future would allow the series to move on, to show that it’s time to let go but to never forever where it came from. That it is time to create a new legend with a new character.
But all those thoughts I had about the DmC game pretty much became pointless because Capcom and Ninja Theory decided to make it a reboot that takes place in an alternative universe (by the way, it’s NOT DMC 5). In fan fiction, alternative universe (abbreviated as AU), is a type of stories in which canonical facts, acts of setting, or characterization in the universe being explored or written about are deliberately changed.
Stories that fall into this definition are usually what-ifs, where possibilities arising from different circumstances or character decisions are explored. Unlike regular fan fiction, which generally remains within the boundaries of the canon set out by the author, alternative universe fiction writers like to explore the possibilities of pivotal changes made to characters’ history, motivations or environment.
TLDR: The way I see it, DmC: Devil May Cry video game is fan fiction. It shouldn’t be judged on how much it lacks canon details. It’s not suppose to be the same thing as the original. It should be judged for how much you had fun playing the game. Judged for how well developed the characters, the setting, and the world is. Judged for it’s game-play, plot and the things that matter.
Personally, I am neutral about it and will only pick a side until I see for myself. I’m tired of seeing people saying it’s awesome and hearing those hating on it. Their reasons for “liking” and “disliking” on it is only based on appearances and small details. Really, the game isn’t even out yet so how can anyone already have an opinion on it. You’ll need actual reasons to back up your likes and dislike of it.
I don’t even trust those who have already “played” it because most of the time they were paid (or given something in exchange) for positive reviews and opinions. Again, I rather see for myself then let other people’s opinions influence my own.
