I don’t see why people are coming up with theories when it should be obvious on what’s going on. The show has been giving out hints on why the survivors that weren’t bitten or scratch and are turning into zombies. So there isn’t a need for any theories, especially after this episode “Better Angels”. Before that episode Rick and Shane came across decaying bodies with a bullet to their brain. They check for bites and scratches but didn’t see any on them and they just assumed that they got infected some other way and they left it at that.
Then in “Better Angels” when Daryl looked over Randall’s body he said that there’s no way he could have died from a zombie bite or scratch. That the cause of his death was his snapped neck.
It’s pretty clear that the show is also using the same idea as the comic book, that everyone is already infected. If a survivor dies from anything other than severe cranial trauma, they turn. If they die from natural causes in their sleep, they turn. If they die from an illness, they turn. If they get stabbed and bleed to death they turn, which is what exactly happened to Shane.
It’s another reason why it’s called “The Walking Dead” because it’s not just about the zombies but the survivors. They are literally the walking dead too, but they just haven’t realized it yet. It’s similar to that expression ‘dead man walking’ when someone says that to a prisoner who’s being led to gallows to be hanged.
