Fan Fiction Rant: OC Personalities |

I’ve always notice this but I do try to ignore it. Majority of the stories I’ve come across with OCs (Original Characters) always seem to behave or have similar personalities. It gets annoying because I would like to see some varies with them.
Why must they be always hyper, impulsive and childish? Why must they be teenagers even? I would like to read more stories with them being more mature and cool-headed. Have them be adults. Have them actually act their suppose age instead of as though they are 14 old years. And have them act according to their history, their culture, etc. as well.
Really. Why would a OC who face nothing but war, hatred, fear, discrimination, and loneliness. Those kind of things are what the OC was born into, what the OC grew up with and what the OC continues to see into the future. They shape how the OC becomes and it’s highly unlikely that out of all that the OC would be childish, hyper, and happy.
A good example would be the movie X-Men: First Class…Erik Lensherr/Magneto. We get to see his past, how he develops/changes from it and then we see how he evolve from that to who he is today. You’ll notice that all his actions, personality and whatnot is connected and matches up, with his way of thinking and personality, behavior, etc.
But I believe the lack of varies is because it’s a character development problem and it becomes as such, because writers don’t take the time to plan them out throughly. That or they feel like they’ll get more readers/reviewers if they have a happy character then a serious one.
Whatever the reason for it, this problem becomes into a Mary-Sue problem, especially when there’s no excuse for the character to be acting they way they are. For example: If a teen or preteen or an adult was abuse they wouldn’t suddenly be intimate with someone they know or a someone they are familar with. They’ll have a hard time getting over what happen and they’ll have difficulties in forming relationship with people. They wouldn’t be all happy, hyper and stealing people’s capes for attention (think Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy 7). That would be unrealistic.
Now, if the horrors they experience made them crazy…such as developing a split personality/another identity that’s hyper or something then that’s acceptable. It’s makes sense and isn’t far from the truth because in reality people do develop split identities from traumatic experiences. Sometimes they aren’t even aware of developing them…which makes them think they’ve gone crazy.
Or other times those traumatic experiences develops other psychological problems for them, like a voice in their head. Or an imaginary friend or whatnot. I’m going off topic, the point is that…why can’t there be some cool-headed and wise OC? Or some shy and friendly OC? Something different and not written so much about.
It gets tiring to read a bunch of different stories but feel like I’m reading about the same OC in nearly every genre and fandom. The only difference is that they have different names and background. They just feel too much like cookie cutter original characters that are either hot-headed, stubborn and tough or hyper, happy and obnoxiously unrestricted. If not they tend to be so emo, dark and depressed that it feels like there’s nothing but ice in place of their ‘soul’.
