What I most want to mention is Shane. This episode, “Save The Last One” also focused on what kind of character is he, what kind of morals he has and how far he’ll go. It’s funny that people just seem to be so shocked by his action tonight. I was just waiting for something bad to happen and sure I didn’t expect that but I knew something was coming at some point.
He left Rick at the hospital. Rick was still alive and he didn’t want to risk pulling out the plugs because that would really kill him. So instead he left him there and ‘barricade’ the door. Why would he bother to do that if Rick was dead? If he really cared he could have come back for him once he got Rick’s family somewhere safe. And he could have told them the truth instead of lying and taking advantage of what that lie gain for him.
He slept with Lori after convincing her that Rick was dead. Then he basically tried to rape her at the CDC even after Rick was back.
He pointed his gun on Rick when they were looking for more zombies and he was tempted to pull the trigger but decided not to, but Dale saw and Shane made the excuse that he couldn’t see Rick clearly and thought he was a zombie.
Ed was an abuser and deserved what he had coming but Shane nearly beat him to death, letting his emotions take over about Lori not wanting to be with him, Rick being back and feeling like Rick is taking over his leadership role. Basically he’s a ticking time bomb when it comes to his emotions (his anger, especially) and it’ll one day cloud his judgement and he will do something terrible.
Shane is not a hero and was never meant to be interpreted as one which is why we see moments where his true character shows through. The ending of this episode just enforced and made it clear about that information into it’s viewers minds.
The way I see it, I feel like they are setting him up for something. To make it clear for the viewers what he’s capable of doing and that something will happen. That maybe there’s going to be a situation that’s similar and will deal with Rick and him. Maybe someone unexpected will also have to make a hard decision as well?
As a added note, no I would NOT done the same if I was in Shane’s situation. He did NOT have to do what he did to Otis. I don’t care if there is an innocent life on the line or if it was someone I love that needed those supplies. I could not live with myself if I had done that. To be honest, that would have never even cross my mind because it’s not in my being to think like that.
What I would have done is basically ask if the other is willing to make the sacrifice if there is no choice. If they won’t then I would consider doing it myself and the only thing I ask from them is that they shoot me before the zombies reach my body. I rather be given the choice then have it taken away by someone else because they want to be selfish and insure that they live instead.
That’s how I am, it does not matter to me if it’s the end of the world, I will never compromise who I am just to survive. If people do not have morals in a lawless apocalyptic land, do they not become monsters themselves? Even worst than them?
When you think about it, they were both tired, limping, having trouble breathing and they were still managing to stay a head of the zombies. Then Shane pulls that stunt because he wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. So he wanted to better his chances by sacrificing Otis. He acted so fast and he didn’t even bother to wait for the last moment to know for sure if they were going to make it.
It was an unnecessary choice too. If they had time to roll around on the ground fighting then they both would have had plenty of time to get to the truck and hall a** to the farm.
Also it doesn’t make what he did acceptable but the least he could have done was put Otis out of his misery and shot him. They were already tearing him apart…and it’s not like the zombies would care if he was alive at that point.
