On September 26, Monday night there was a two-hour pilot of Terra Nova from Brannon Braga and Steven Spielberg. It starts in a dystopian future, 138 years from now, basically in the (the year 2149) 22nd century. The atmosphere has turned poisonous, the younger generation has never seen white clouds or the moon. It is overpopulated that it’s damaging the planet so much, that rigorous laws have been established in an attempt to slow it down. The law limits a family membership to four (the mother, the father and two children).
From what we are told and what little we can see the Earth is in horrible condition. There are large domes areas that cleanse the polluted air (which seems to be only the wealthy that can afford to live in) and citizens must wear “re-breathers” on a daily basis just to survive. However, mankind of the 22nd century soon discover something that may give them a second chance. A fracture in time-space has been detected, and so man of the future has begun to send “pilgrimages” back in time some 85 million years…to start over.
The discovery of this time fracture has also revealed that this gateway leads not to our own past (which avoids the butterfly effect for them); but to the past of an alternate reality. Therefore, the people who go back in time are free to interfere in the affairs of the world without worrying about deleting their own histories from existence. Of course, they may be interfering with alternate selves or other, innocent human beings, but no one bothers to bring up that point (or at least not yet). If evolution unfolds as it does in our reality, the pilgrimages to Terra Nova are certainly usurping it.
So far it’s a bit predictable and stereotypical with cookie cutter character archetypes and the traditional family being used as a center piece. That and the characters doing dumb/unrealistic things, like sneaking out to go for a naked swim while they KNOW it is dangerous (at least bring some/sneak some weapons out. Heck why weren’t there at least one or two sensible teens that decide to stay behind?)
There’s also the unrealistic way that the kid was suddenly being able to handle a weapon without having any training or knowledge of how to handle it. Or how they wasted their time in talking/arguing instead of helping the injured person and getting out of there quickly. It should be common sense to leave as quickly as possible because you don’t know if the attacker is still in the area or that they’ll come back. I also thought they would have at least an electric fence or something because giant bugs and other kinds of dinosaurs could climb over it or break through.
Besides the flaws it seems to have at the moment, I hope that it’ll improve because it does have the potential to become a great show. It was still entertaining but I usually don’t like to give up on a show without at least seeing a few more episodes. That way I’ll have a complete grasp whether or not it gets better and if it’s worth watching/being on tv. All in all, it’s too early for me to tell after all there have been some novels and movies that start off a little poorly but improve/draw you in the further you get into it.
