New Jersey this afternoon (around 1:55 PM) felt the effects of a 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Virginia about 300 miles away from the Shore area. The quake shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island and New York City. There are reports of the earthquake being felt in: Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina and more.
“What New Jerseyans felt was an intensity of 2 but not on a Richter scale,” said Larry Ragonese of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
“It was enough to shake the house, rock chandeliers, rattle doors and set off a car alarm or two, though no damage,” said Rick Donnelly of Allentown.
This is just my experience, basically what I was doing/where I was at the time. When it first happen I didn't think much of it because my windows were shaking and I just assume it was really windy. It happens sometimes but then I found it a bit odd that it was happening so random. The weather was sunny and warm with a little bit of a breeze. No where in the forecast for today did it say it was going to be windy.
So a little confused, I look out the window to check the trees. You know, to see if the leaves are blowing wildly and if they are then it means it really was windy. Anyway, the leaves were still so that meant it's not the weather but the building itself that's shaking. At that point the shaking got a bit stronger and noticeable.
The antenna on my dad's television was hitting the wall, my color pencils were falling to the ground and various items were rocking back and forth. But otherwise, nothing broke or crash.
I also happen to be on my laptop when it started. So I went on facebook to see if I was the only one to feel it. Then I went to look for my dad to see if he's feeling the earthquake or the aftershocks...whatever it really is. He was washing the dishes at the time but stopped to hold onto the kitchen counter to help him keep his balance.
Then it stopped, I guess it lasted only a minute.
I was discussing with him about how the earthquake was strong enough to shake the whole building. The earthquake wasn't scary but it's the thought of my building breaking that is slightly frightening. After all, majority of the old buildings in NJ aren't build to withstand earthquakes (no matter if the earthquakes are consider weak to other states who are used to it). I live in a old building...I don't remember the exact year it was built but it has to be sometime before 1976.
As you can see, it's an old building and being that it's the East coast I doubt when they were built did the developers keep in mind of earthquakes because they don't happen a lot...or at least aren't ever strong enough to do much damage.
So one day when an 7.0 or higher earthquake happens in NJ or somewhere nearby. There's gonna be some serious damage and a lot of freaked out people. It was surprising to hear my building creek, shake and make sounds that I've never heard a building do or at least didn't know it could. And experience something like it, but that's because I'm NOT use to earthquakes that are strong enough to shake.
Otherwise, it was an interesting day. It was sorta fun now that it's over and I'm back to being bored again.
