Stargate is a military science fiction movie. It was originally released sometime in 1994 when I was 5 years old and it was three years later when I finally saw it. I don't know what about it that pulled me in to it but I found it fascinating for some strange reason. I guess I wasn't the only one who thought that because it became a worldwide hit grossing nearly $200 million worldwide when it was first released. Plus, that same three years later when I first saw it, a television series title Stargate SG-1 was introduce as a sequel for the film.
Just a few episodes into it and it seal the deal in pulling me into it. However, one does not need to watch the movie in order to get the television show, but if one wants to then go ahead. In the movie, Stargate, an interstellar teleportation device, a ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole is found in Egypt, leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra. A small group of US troops and an Egyptologist use an ancient device found in 1920s Egypt on Earth, to transport themselves to a distant planet.
The television series picks up after the movie, General Hammond summons Colonel Jack O'Neill out of retirement to embark on a secret rescue mission. O'Neill confesses that he disobeyed orders to destroy the Stargate on Planet Abydos, and that scientist Daniel Jackson may still be alive. Arriving on Abydos with his team, O'Neill meets up once again with the scientist, who has discovered a giant elaborate cartouche in hieroglyphics. All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy: a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time, a reality.
The television was also a successful hit that it, in 2004, it created a spin-off TV series Stargate Atlantis. Just as I enjoyed Stargate SG-1 I too enjoyed the spin off. I was honestly a little skeptical thinking it wasn't going to be as great but it pleasantly surprise me. However, another spin off in 2009, a third series titled Stargate Universe didn't amaze me and I'm disappointed that it...well disappointed me. In addition to film and television, the Stargate franchise has expanded into other media, including books, video games, and comic books. These supplements to the film and television series have resulted in significant development of the show's fictional universe and mythology. In 2008, the films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum were released direct-to-DVD, which in total grossed over $21 million in the United States. In 2002 the franchise's first animated series, Stargate Infinity, began airing, which holds no canonicity in the franchise despite its Stargate SG-1 inspired plot.
I recommend this to anyone interested in military science fiction, mystery, suspense, drama, aliens, action and adventure.
