Free verse poem I had to write for English. Poetry isn't my forte by any means, but I can still manage.
However, it's hard to not get caught on the whole "rhyme scheme," which we weren't supposed to do. A friend told me to just jot down a bunch of thoughts and organize them a little- that's free verse. I think I could have maybe done better if I didn't have to keep it under a page, mais c'est la vie.
May or may not revisit it in the future without such limits.

Always with you, it seems I've had to
chase my tail while you
tell me tales
about a black moon in a white sky
I believed like I believed I could fix you
I knew that you
You needed me, but still you kneaded me
into something fragile, worn, easily torn
in two just as easily
as you
So now I'm left to
hide my heart beneath the boards so you can't get at it
like a rat
to the last food for miles in a wasted land
While a desperate survivor huddles
over a fire, saving the morsel to be saved from
the dead-bringer
filled with dread
a void
where feeling and
food
once were
Now I find that
To look at you is to stare into an abyss
with all of R'lyeh staring back
you've built the obelisk
whose maddening hieroglyphs
drive away all who would ever dare
to come near
finally I admit to being of those numbers
one of the runners
Finally, I'll admit that I've had enough
But I've already lost my mind
Was the price too high to pay for it all to be in vain?
It's time to paint the house of leaves in a
soylent green
and let me be
I've always waited for you to stand up from the floor
find the book of lore reminding you of how to smile
see my shore and know you're
done swimming in
forlorn seas
But if by now you don't know the score
My heart beneath that floorboard shall beat for you nevermore!
