I get inspiration by getting into the fandom or genre that I'm interested in writing for. For example, if I'm planning to write a fanfiction of the TV show, Supernatural I will watch the episodes and check out the behind the scenes and/or commentary because they might inspire ideas. If I'm working on an original story then I will read books that deal with the genre I plan to write for. That helps too in getting me to think about my own story and see what I can do different and make it my own.
Sometimes I think of "what if" questions. For example, what if I put Sam and Dean into a new situation that they haven't been to before and see how they'll react to it? What if I extended a certain scene in an episode? What if I be silly and write a crossover story with the characters meeting another character briefly?
If none of that works then I will listen to songs and if there's an emotion invoke from the song or a story behind it, I use it to inspire me to write a story revolving it. Or sometimes my dreams gives me ideas. Or I actually use events/interesting moments in my life as ideas and convert it into a part of the story if it works. Sometimes just reading other fics or books in general can help inspire you and put you in the mood to write your own story.
