Your name is the one part of your life that society can't strip away. Even the homeless, criminals or whatnot living in the streets have one thing they all cherish and that's their identity. A name is only as special as one makes it throughout their life, and is a reflection of how well one lives their life. On the one end of the spectrum, you have those who have ended up making their names known for the wrong reason, such as being on FBI Ten Most Wanted Criminals. On the other end, you have those people whose names are to be revered because of the good they have done or the influence they have. And then there are those whose names have been stamped into history. If one is capable of doing something extremely remarkable (or extremely terrible during a critical period) history will remember your name long after you have died and impress upon your legacy.
My name isn't anything special, simply because there is no grand story behind it or super special reason I was named it. My name is Paula and I was named that simply because it was the feminine form of Paul which is my brother's name. My mother told me that originally she was planning to name me something different. It's been so long that she forget what it was, but my father had a problem with it. Whatever the name my mother originally picked was difficult for him to pronounced. So because of that they decided to go with Paula because it was the easiest choice.
Before I even knew the meaning of my name, I found it funny that it fitted me so well. It's actually ironic when I tell others what my name means or when they look it up. You see, Paula is derived from Latin origins meaning "little." I happen to be short, very short and that's the first physical attribute that many see when they meet me.
In a old baby naming book I have, it define my name more, "small in stature but big in love and constancy." Many that hear that find it even more ironic because that's exactly how they think and see me as when they get to know me. Also, the name is used in honor of St. Paul the Apostle, and St. Paula, a 3rd-century Nicomedian martyr.
Fact: It's ironic that my name fits me. Paula means "little." I happen to be pretty short.
